ARTISTIC STAFF BIOGRAPHIES (See Cast Biographies below)

cesbronJacques Cesbron, Choreographer, danced with the Paris Opera Ballet and as soloist with the Harkness Ballet. He was principal dancer at the Pennsylvania Ballet Company and the Metropolitan Opera; and he taught with Joffrey Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, Connecticut College, and Theatre du Silence. Cesbron has been guest teacher with American Ballet Theatre Company and Intensive Summer Program. His extensive choreography includes new productions of Nutcracker, The Rite of Spring, Les Noces, Daphnis et Chloé, and Madame Bovary for Indiana University Ballet Theater. For Carmina burana, he was awarded an Indiana Arts Commission Fellowship for Choreography. He has collaborated with Jacobs School of Music composers to create five new works. In 2005, he choreographed the full-length Cinderella for Indiana University Ballet Theater, which will return in the 2006-2007 season.

JobinSara Jobin, Guest Conductor, made her San Francisco Opera conducting debut in 2004, leading perforamnces of Tosca and Der fliegende Holländer. She joined the San Francisco Opera music staff in 1999 performing rehearsal, backstage, and prompting duties and, subsequently, conducting the 2003 Showcase Production of the San Francisco Opera Center. Her 2005-2006 season included engagements with Calgary Opera, Tacoma Opera, and the Merola Opera Program. Jobin’s recording of Chris Brubeck’s River of Song with Frederica von Stade and the Tassajara Symphony Orchestra is being released on the Koch International Classics label this winter. The Massachusetts native has also conducted for Opera San Jose, the Women’s Philharmonic, the San Fransicso and Alberta Ballet Companies, and children’s concerts for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic, and Toledo Symphony. At age 16, Jobin attended Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, where she was a Leonard Bernstein Music Scholar. Graduating with a John Knowles Paine Fellowship, she studied conducting with Charles Bruck at the Pierre Monteux School in Maine. Jobin has a black belt in judo and sings in the gospel choir at Glide Memorial.

O'hearnRobert O’Hearn, Set and Costume Designer, earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1943. He has been a scenic and costume designer for the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, Vienna Volksoper, Hamburg Staatsoper, New York City Opera, Greater Miami Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Ballet West. He served as professor for the Studio and Forum of Stage Design in New York from 1968 to 1988. O’Hearn has also given guest lectures and classes at Carnegie Mellon, Brandeis, and Penn State University.

HigginsC. David Higgins, Set and Costume Designer, has been designing scenery since 1972, when he began working at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as a master scenic artist. Now a faculty member, he teaches set design and has been designing opera and ballet scenery and costumes across the globe for theaters in the United States, England, Italy, Iceland, and Korea. With over 150 productions to his credit, he has been described as one of America’s finest scenic painters by Opera News magazine and is best known for his detailed, Italianate painting style.

Virginia CesbronVirginia Cesbron, trained privately with Martha Manners and at the School of American Ballet, and apprenticed with American Ballet Theatre. A former dancer, she performed with the Pennsylvania Ballet Company, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and New Jersey Ballet. Cesbron taught and was ballet mistress with the Ballet Hispanico of New York, the Dance Movement, and Theatre du Silence. In addition, she has worked extensively in arts and education in New York City, including as an original faculty member of the Special Program for Gifted and Talented at The New Ballet School for the Feld Ballet, and as the Director of Swans Island Dance and Swans Island Maine. Her choreography includes numerous original works for Indiana University Ballet Theater and Pre-College Ballet Program.

Guoping WangGuoping Wang. A native of China, Wang studied ballet at the Ballet Department of the Shanghai Dance School and in the graduate program at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. He danced with the Shanghai Ballet Company from 1980 to 1991 and then joined Ballet Chicago in 1993, performing leading roles with the company through 1995. In 1997, while also a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Wang was recognized by the Chicago Dance Community with a Ruth Page Award for Outstanding Dance Achievement. Wang has been on the faculty of the School of Ballet Chicago and a guest teacher and coach for Indiana University Ballet Theater. This is his third year as a full-time faculty member at IU.

Ter-GrigoryanIrina Ter-Grigoryan, Music Director, received her degrees in piano performance, pedagogy, and as an accompanist in the former Soviet Union. Ter-Grigoryan served as a faculty member at the Baku State Conservatory and as an accompanist for the Azerbaijan State Theater Opera and Ballet. She was selected from a small pool of musicians to accompany international and regional competitions representing the Soviet Union. During her time in the United States, she has continued her work as an accompanist with the Temple Square Concert Series Recitals in Salt Lake City, UT, the University of Utah, and Ballet West Co., and as a collaborative pianist at DePauw University. Ter-Grigoryan currently holds the position of accompanist and music director with the Indiana University Ballet Department.

Chun Chi AnChun Chi An, Music Director. A native of China, Chi An graduated from Beijing Music school in the early 70s. As a principal pianist, he worked with Beijing Central Ballet Company from 1972 to1982. He came to America in 1982 and has a master’s degree in piano performance. From 1982 to 1992, he worked with Ballet West, Richmond Ballet, Cleveland Ballet, and Ballett der Deutschen Oper am Rhein ( Germany). As a Music Director, he has been working with the Ballet Department in the IU Jacobs School of Music since 1992.


CAST BIOGRAPHIES

AyersKathryn Ayers (Lead Mirliton, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3), a resident of Charlotte, NC, is a senior majoring in ballet with an outside field in business. She trained at Danceplace, the official school of North Carolina Dance Theater, under Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Patricia McBride, and Mark Diamond. She also spent her summers training at North Carolina School of the Arts and the Kirov Academy of Ballet. Ayers has performed in many IUBT productions, most recently, in the premiere of Jacques Cesbron’s Screemin’ Meemies (Fall Ballet 2006).

Ivy ChowIvy Chow (Chinese, Dec. 1) began her training with the Russell School of Ballet, home of the Fairfax Ballet. For the last two years, she trained with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Graduate Program, during which she performed in their professional productions of Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. She has also attended summer programs at American Ballet Theatre, International Summer Dance at Point Park University, and Ballet Chicago. Chow, a freshman, danced this fall in the IU Opera Theater’s productions of Don Giovanni and Manon.

Lauren CollierLauren Collier (Snow Queen, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.) is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Biochemistry. She began her ballet training in Oklahoma City and continued with many schools including the Harid Conservatory, School of Alberta Ballet, and the National Ballet School of Canada. Summer studies include scholarships at the Tulsa Ballet Summer Workshop and the Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Collier is the recipient of the Jacobs School of Music Dean’s Award and Kenneth C. Whitener Award. She is also a member of Hutton Honors College, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Kappa Alpha Theta Women’s Fraternity. Featured roles with IUBT include Lead in Glassworks (Fall Ballet 2004), Dewdrop Fairy in Nutcracker (2005), Lead in the world premiere of Winds from the South (Fall Ballet 2005), Soloist in Napoli Divertissements (Spring Ballet 2006), and Soloist in Screemin’ Meemies (Fall Ballet 2006).

Benjamin DelonyBenjamin Delony (Fritz, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3; Nutcracker; Spanish Male, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.), a native of Baton Rouge, LA, began his training with Marianne Hebert and Madalyn Montegudo before dancing extensively with the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre. He has attended summer ballet intensives at Ballet Austin and the Harid Conservatory and was offered a position as a trainee with the Nashville Ballet in February 2006. In October, Delony was featured as a Soloist in Screemin’ Meemies.

Lauren FadeleyLauren Fadeley (Sugar Plum Fairy, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.) was born in Orlando, FL, where she began her dance training at the age of four. At 15, she moved to NYC to study at the School of American Ballet on scholarship. A year later, she was asked to join the New York City Ballet, where she performed various ballets by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and original works by Christopher Wheeldon. After dancing with the company for two years, Fadeley chose to pursue higher education and is now a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Exercise Science. Since joining IUBT, Fadeley has performed leading roles in Serenade, Sonatine, Cinderella, Winds from the South, Spring Waters, Who Cares?, Allegro Brillante, Fire of Life, Screemin’ Meemies, and Nutcracker. Her honors include being a regional title winner at the Youth America Grand Prix and a member of the corps de Natalie for Natalie dancewear. Fadeley also serves as an instructor and ballet mistress for the IU Pre-College Ballet Program.

Caitlin GriffeyCaitlin Griffey (Lead Mirliton, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.) is from Baltimore, MA, where she began her training at Towson University Children’s Dance Division and, later, The Baltimore School for the Arts, under Norma Pera. She has attended a number of respected summer programs including American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet ( New York), and the Houston Ballet. Griffey danced as an apprentice with the Charleston Ballet Theater for a year prior to attending Indiana University, where she is seeking a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Psychology.

Adrienne HowardAdrienne Howard (Arabian, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3), a New Jersey native, is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Nutrition Science. She began her dance training at the age of four, studying at several institutions on scholarship. Summer programs include intensives with the Rock School and American Ballet Theatre in New York, where she was most recently hired as an intern for the summer of 2006. At IU, she is an active member of the Hudson and Holland Scholarship Program, Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, in addition to being an instructor for the university's Pre-College Ballet Program. Since joining IUBT, she has performed in Serenade , Glassworks, Nutcracker, Cinderella, The Final Pointe, Napoli Divertissements, and Screemin’ Meemies.

Whitney HuellWhitney Huell (Dew Drop Fairy, Dec. 2 eve.) trained at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities under the instruction of Stanislav Issaev and Robert Barnett. She has attended summer programs with the Boston Ballet and the Dance Theatre of Harlem (full scholarship). Huell competed in the Youth America Grand Prix Regional Competition and was awarded second place in the Classical Senior Division. Proceeding to the national level, she was awarded an Honorable Mention. She is a member of the Hutton Honors College, Phi Eta Sigma, and NSCS, and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Psychology. Huell has been featured as Lead Flower in Nutcracker (2005), Soloist in Paquita (Spring Ballet 2006), Soloist in Napoli Divertissements (Spring Ballet 2006), and as a Soloist in Screemin’ Meemies (Fall Ballet 2006).

Anton LaMonAnton LaMon (Drosselmeyer, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3) began his ballet training in the fall of 2004 with the IU Pre-College Ballet Program. He attended summer programs at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (on scholarship) and Debbie Allen Dance Academy and received additional training from the IU African American Dance Company. LaMon has also been active in musical theater, performing the role of Dream Curly in the Discoveryland! production of Oklahoma this summer. Since joining IUBT, LaMon has performed in Allegro Brillante, Fire of Life, and Screemin’ Meemies.

Stephanie LampeStephanie Lampe (Lead Flower, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.) is a senior honors student pursuing dual degrees in Ballet Performance and Mathematics with a minor in modern dance. Prior to attending IU, Lampe graduated with honors from the Interlochen Arts Academy and completed summer study on scholarship at BalletMet Columbus, NYSSSA, and the School of American Ballet. She was awarded first place in the 2006 regional National Arts and Letters competition and represented the local chapter in the National Competition in Jacksonville, FL in May. While at IU, Lampe has performed as the Stepmother and Stepsister in Cinderella (Spring Ballet 2005), Lead Mirliton in Nutcracker (2003, 2004, 2005), Lead in the Napoli Divertissements Tarantella (Spring Ballet 2006), in the Pas de Trois in Paquita (Spring Ballet 2006), Soloist in Fire of Life (Fall Ballet 2006), and in many other ballets, operas, and modern dance shows. She also serves as an instructor and ballet mistress for the IU Pre-College Ballet Program.

Dave LevyDavid Joel Levy (Cavalier, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.; Lead Spanish, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3), a native of Washington, DC, has returned to IU after performing for the 2004-2005 season with the Sacramento Ballet, where, as a corps member, he performed both corps and soloist roles. Since his return, Levy has been featured as a Soloist in Fire of Life (Fall Ballet 2006) and performed in Winds from the South, Napoli Divertissements, Allegro Brillante, Screemin’ Meemies, and as Chinese, the Prince, and the Snow King in Nutcracker.

Sandhurst MigginsSandhurst Miggins (Drosselmeyer, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.; Snow King, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2; Arabian) , a native of Trinidad and Tobago, began his ballet training at the age of 17 at Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Upon graduating high school, Miggins enrolled at Butler University, where he had the opportunity to perform in St. Petersburg, Russia, as well as in a joint presentation with the National Ballet School of Poland in Warsaw, Poland. In 2005, he attended the Rock School for Dance Education’s summer intensive and was later invited to enroll in the program on full scholarship for the 2005-2006 school year. Miggins is currently in his sophomore year at IU and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet with an Outside Field in Legal Studies and an Anthropology Minor.

Joseph MorrisseyJoseph Morrissey (Prince, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.; Cavalier, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3) trained with the Boston Ballet School and the Harid Conservatory before returning to the Boston Ballet Company for the 2001-2002 season. An alumnus of the Jacobs School of Music (2005), Morrissey spent the past season dancing with the Charleston Ballet Theatre and studied, this past summer, with the School of Ballet at Jacob’s Pillow. Choreographic accomplishments include working with the Central Florida Ballet, Boca Ballet Theater, Charleston Ballet Theatre, and the Ensemble Ballet d’Adriatico in Ascoli Piceno, Italy. He recently joined the Arts Administration graduate program at Indiana University.

Tom PenmanTom Penman (Fritz, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2 mat.; Prince, Dec. 2 eve. & Dec. 3) graduated from the ballet department of Walnut Hill School in 2005. His summer intensives include Alvin Ailey, Harid Conservatory, San Francisco Ballet, and Juilliard, with additional training at Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School and the Harid Conservatory. Penman has been featured as a Soloist in Napoli Divertissements (Spring Ballet 2006) and Fire of Life (Fall Ballet 2006), as well as performing Fritz and Chinese in Nutcracker (2005).

Jessica Schachne (Chinese, Dec. 2 mat.) , a south Florida native, is entering her second year pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Business. She began training seriously under the direction of Deborah Buttner before her acceptance to the Harid Conservatory in 2003. Schachne, who suffered an injury during the spring, returned to the stage this fall in the IU Opera Theater production of Manon.

Jessica SchroederJessica Schroeder (Snow Queen, Dec. 3; Chinese, Dec. 3), a native of Ohio, is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Nutrition Science. She trained at the Christina Meneer School of Dance and was a member of Children’s Ballet Theatre for 10 years, having been a featured guest artist for their annual Nutcracker. She received summer intensive training from the Harid Conservatory and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, among others, and is the recipient of the IU Faculty Academic and Hudson Holland Scholarships. Schroeder has performed in numerous IUBT productions; lately, Allegro Brillante, Fire of Life, and Screemin’ Meemies.

Grace SchwartzGrace Schwartz (Lead Flower, Dec. 3) was born in Baltimore, MD, where she trained at the Baltimore School for the Arts. Summer programs attended include Houston Ballet Academy, Joffrey Ballet (NYC), and American Ballet Theatre (NYC). Prior to attending IU, Schwartz danced as an apprentice with Charleston Ballet Theatre in Charleston, SC. Since joining IUBT, she performed principal roles in Jacques Cesbron’s Sonata in B Minor, Passages, and Screemin’ Meemies.

Lacy SimpsonLacy Simpson (Chinese, Dec. 2 eve.) is a sophomore ballet major pursuing an outside field in gender studies. Born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in Maryville, TN, Simpson graduated from the Virginia School of the Arts in Lynchburg, VA. She danced with Boston Ballet as a trainee for one year, attended summer intensives at Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, Ballet Austin, and BalletMet, and danced as an apprentice with the Chautauqua Ballet Company for one summer. Simpson is currently a member of the Hutton Honors College, National Scholars Honor Society, and Phi Eta Sigma Honors Fraternity.

Elaine SinclairElaine Sinclair (Arabian, Dec. 1; Snow Queen, Dec. 2 eve.) is a junior ballet major pursuing an outside field in biology with a minor in chemistry. A native of Richmond, VA, Sinclair studied at the Richmond Ballet for 11 years, her final year as a trainee. She attended summer programs at the Richmond Ballet, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre (NYC), and the Harid Conservatory. A former high school valedictorian, she continues to distinguish herself academically and is a member of the Hutton Honors College and Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society. Sinclair was a featured Soloist in Cathedral (Fall Ballet 2006) and has also been seen on stage in Glassworks, Nutcracker, Cinderella, Winds from the South, The Final Pointe, Napoli Divertissements, and Paquita.

Ashley ThursbyAshley Thursby (Clara, Dec. 2 & 3), from Richmond, MO, and trained at the Kansas City Ballet, was placed on full scholarship after her first summer of training, and continued in that capacity until joining the company as a Student Apprentice. With the Kansas City Ballet, she performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a fairy, in Giselle as a wili, and numerous roles, including Chinese, in Nutcracker. Thursby also performed with Ballet West’s touring production of Sleeping Beauty. During the summers, she has trained at Jillana, San Francisco Ballet School (scholarship 3 years), School of American Ballet, and Alonzo King’s Lines Pre-Professional Program in San Francisco (on scholarship). She is a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Journalism and is the recipient of the Music Deans Award and a Friends of Music scholarship.

Catherine WolfsonCatherine Wolfson (Clara, Dec. 1; Sugar Plum Fairy, Dec. 2 eve. and Dec. 3), an Indiana native, trained with the Southold Dance Theater and attended summer programs with American Ballet Theatre and the School of American Ballet, among others. She is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Psychology. While with IUBT, Wolfson has performed as Clara in Nutcracker (2003-2005), Puss ‘n Boots in Sleeping Beauty (Spring Ballet 2004), the Winter Fairy in Cinderella (Spring Ballet 2005), and Soloist in the world premiere of Winds from the South (Fall Ballet 2005), among others. Wolfson’s honors include a nomination for the Princess Grace Award in 2001 and membership in Hutton Honors College and the Golden Key International Honor Society.
