Joanna Biermann, visiting assistant professor of musicology, and Robert Hatten, professor of music theory, have been invited to present lectures in Warsaw, Poland, on March 21 at the Ninth Annual Easter Beethoven Festival, a 10-day international festival organized by Mme. Elzbieta Penderecka. The topic of this year's symposium is "Beethoven Between the Music of North and South." Biermann’s lecture is titled "Beethoven's Christus am Oelberge: North-South Encounter, Conflict and Synthesis" and Hatten’s will speak "Beethoven's Italian Trope: Modes of Stylistic Appropriation in the Sonatas."

Congratulations to David Dzubay for winning the Columbia Orchestra’s 2005 American Composer Competition with his orchestral work "Shadow Dance".
Miriam Fried and Violette Verdy were recognized for their outstanding teaching and research at the annual Indiana University Founders Day celebration March 6 in Assembly Hall. Both faculty members were elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor. Fried was appointed to the Dorothy and Richard Starling Endowed Chair in Music and professor of music (violin) and Verdy was named professor of music (ballet). Both are seen here in Founder’s Day celebrations with their respective students.

Ralph Papakhian, head of technical services at the Cook Music Library, and Sue Stancu, sound recording cataloger at Cook Music Library, each recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Music OCLC Users Group (MOUG) at its national meeting. The awards were presented in recognition of their “contributions to music librarianship as cataloger, educator, mentor, and friend.”
Bettina Poulsen, administrative secretary with Dean O’Brien, was featured in an interview in the January issue (Vol. 19, No. 2) of IU’s “Majority Report,” a newsletter published by the Office of Women’s Affairs. |

Pianist Steve Mann will be joining the Adamant Music School (Vermont) to perform in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall on Palm Sunday, March 20th. Mann was also recently accepted, along with studio-mate Joy Reeder, into the TCU/Van Cliburn Institute in Fort Worth Texas. Both are students of Menahem Pressler working on their BM in Piano Performance.

Lisa LaFleur, a student of James McDonald, will be attending Central City this summer as a Studio Artist. She will be covering Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly as well as the First Wild Goose and Moppet in Paul Bunjan.
Soprano Virginia Le Blanc performed William Banfield’s The Prophetess II (for high soprano and piano) February 27 in “Extensions of the Tradition” sponsored by the African American Arts Institute, IU School of Music, and Archives of African American Music and Culture . Le Blanc is next scheduled to sing the role of the 2 nd Witch in the University Chorale’s production of Dido and Aeneas. She is a student of Alice Hopper. Edward Mout recently won 5th place in the Eugene Opera Belle Voci Competition. This coming summer, he will be going to Central City as a Young Artist and will sing Andy in Paul Bunyan as well as the leading tenor role in The Face on the Barroom Floor. He will also cover Anatol in Vanessa and Inkslinger in Paul Bunjan. Mout studies with James McDonald.
Chester Pidduck, who is currently in the Young Artist Program with Nashville Opera, will be going to Central City in the summer as a Young Artist. He will be singing Defeated in Paul Bunjan and covering Slim in the same opera. He is a student of James McDonald.
Jonathan Stinson, a student of James McDonald, will be singing the roles of Yamadori and the Imperial Commisioner with the Cleveland Opera in April. He will be going to Central City in the summer as a Young Artist and he will sing Jensen in Paul Bunjan and Cofer Helson in the same opera. Stinson will also cover Yamadori in Madama Butterfly.
John Sumners will be returning to Central City this summer as a Young Artist. He will be singing the roles of Sam in Paul Bunjan and Larry and Matt in The Face from the Barroom Floor as well as covering the role of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. He studies with James McDonald.
David Swain will be going to Central City this summer as a Studio Artist. He will sing Cronie #2 in Paul Bunjan and cover Jensen in the same show. Swain studies with James McDonald. |
