WFIU ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DEE STEWART

Dee Stewart

WFIU’s Artist of the Month for September is trombonist M. Dee Stewart.

M. Dee Stewart is a professor of trombone and euphonium at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He joined the faculty in 1980 after playing for nearly two decades with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
He has made five recordings with the Grammy Award-winning Philadelphia Brass Ensemble. While in Philadelphia he taught extensively, including ten years on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music. He has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago, San Francisco, and Saint Louis Symphonies, the Minnesota Orchestra, and Summit Brass.

Stewart has degrees in music education from Ball State University and Northwestern University. His instrumental expertise ranges from alto, tenor, and bass trombones to euphonium and bass trumpet. He is the author of two books, Arnold Jacobs: Legacy of a Master and Philip Farkas: Legacy of a Master as well as numerous articles. At the International Trombone Festival in Boulder, Colorado, Stewart was awarded the 1998 Neill Humfeld Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is also a recipient of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music Teaching Excellence Recognition Award.
