BRILLIANT COMIC ROMP “THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR” OPENS TONIGHT!

Merry Wives of WindsorIndiana University Opera Theater continues its 60th anniversary season with the lighthearted Shakespearean comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor by German composer Carl Otto Nicolai. The opera will be performed at 8 p.m. at the Musical Arts Center on Oct. 24, 25, 31 and Nov. 1.  >> Click here for more.

SPELLING, MATH, SCIENCE . . . AND VIOLIN?
Fairview Elementary School

Starting in late September, all 46 first-graders at Fairview Elementary School added a new subject to their regular class schedules: violin. Through an outreach program supervised by Brenda Brenner, an associate professor of music education at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, first-graders at Fairview began taking violin lessons three times a week.

JACOBS SCHOOL OF MUSIC GIVEN “TREASURE TROVE” OF RARE MUSIC

Weisberg DonationA collection of rare scores for ensemble and orchestra has been donated to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music by Arthur Weisberg, a bassoon legend, composer, author and Jacobs faculty member from 2005 to 2008. The music scores date from his tenure as conductor and music director of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, the first ensemble of its kind, which he founded in 1961. >>Click here for more.

Dan PerantoniIn addition to The Merry Wives of Windsor opening tonight, the seasonal favorite Octubafest kicks off, culminating in Octubaween on Oct. 31. Nigel North and Gabriel Crouch present an EMI recital Oct. 26, and the University Orchestra performs later that evening. David Baker’s Jazz Ensemble returns to the MAC on Oct. 27, with Pat Harbison’s Jazz Combo swinging Oct. 28, and the Concert Orchestra in full splendor Oct. 29.
