Young Italian country boy Nemorino simply cannot summon enough savior-faire to please well-to-do young farm owner Adina. She is very much in love with him but annoyed by his lack of self-assurance and uses Belcore, a sergeant stationed in the village, to try to provoke him into action. Everything is further complicated by the appearance of a “doctor,” who sees in the romantic entanglement an additional chance to make some fast money in the village. After his arrival, an amazing number of situations reverse themselves. Is it really the result of the potion purveyor’s “elixir of love”?
