Set in 19th-century Vienna.
Strauss' magical opera, with its romantic Viennese plot and lush, waltz-time melodies depicts Count Waldner, father of Arabella and Zdenka, a habitual gambler whose fortunes have dwindled. His only hope out of this embarrassment is to marry the beautiful Arabella, who is in great demand, to a wealthy suitor. When Waldner sends Arabella's picture to one of his old regimental cronies, the friend's nephew sees it and is enamored with her. They meet and fall in love at first sight. Meanwhile, Zdenka's efforts to win her own lover result in a misunderstanding that almost puts an end to the budding romance. But this is Vienna, and they are young...
