Set in the Mountains of Tennessee, Recent Past

With beautiful haunting music by one of the leading operatic composers and librettists in the United States today, Susannah is the most performed American opera. Set in Appalachia, this deeply meaningful and tragic story portrays hypocrisy, intolerance, and the consequences of both. When Susannah is discovered bathing in the local creek of a pious village, the elders denounce and ostracize her. After hearing that the Preacher Olin Blitch followed her home from church and then seduced her, Susannah’s brother, Sam, kills Blitch, and the outraged crowd converges on Susannah’s house. Then … See what happens next in this work filled with many moments of breathtaking beauty!

Sung in English with English supertitles
