Choral Ensemble Auditions

Choral Ensembles – X070

Audition Information

Auditions for fall semester will be held during Welcome Week at the times listed below. Sign up for an audition in the Choral Office, MA051, Monday through Friday during the month of August. The office is located on the ground floor of the Music Annex. There are separate sign-up sheets for voice-majors and non-voice majors. Frequently non-voice majors have a lot of singing experience and demonstrate excellent natural singing skills. We will ask them to audition with the voice-majors for a suitable ensemble placement. Upon signing up for an audition each student receives a Choral Ensembles Audition Form to fill out and bring to the audition. The form asks for local contact information and class schedule. The auditions last 7 minutes for voice majors and 5 minutes for non-voice majors. The faculty conductors are principally interested in hearing how well a student matches pitch, musical instincts, the student's vocal range, and general approach to music-making. Students are advised to sing something they feel comfortable performing for a small audience of faculty members and student conductors. An art song of any period and language or solo selection from an oratorio is ideal. Please do NOT sing an operatic aria at this audition. An accompanist is provided at the auditions so please bring sheet music.

Non-voice majors typically will not have studied any song repertoire so collections of well-known folk tunes will be available to read from at the auditions. If a student wishes to bring song collections, hymnals, etc. to sing from, these options are acceptable.

The audition results will be posted outside the Choral Office (MA051) by September 8th. Along with the audition results we will post signs indicating when the first rehearsal takes place and when and where to pick up your music. We encourage all students enrolled in X070 to schedule your choral ensemble auditions as early in the audition process as possible. For students who plan to audition for roles in the IU Opera Theater, we recommend that you complete your choral audition by Friday, August 29th so that you can give your full attention to your opera audition the following week.
