PROGRAM NOTES
Displays of virtuosity are, I feel, among the most universally powerful aspects of solo performing, and no instrument embodies the spirit of virtuosity quite like the violin. There is a certain duality of attraction and repulsion that surrounds this instrument, this romantic icon, this obsession of Nero and of Paganini, while even at the same time, the violin's association with virtuosic fiddling brings to mind thoughts of happiness and innocence. So, I worked with these paradigms in writing Fantasies & Dances . As the title suggests, the piece is comprised of several episodes, with romantic though slightly disturbing fantasies alternating with a set of playful, carefree dances. They're not all tied together musically, and some music comes back, some doesn't. There is also a good dose of absurdity, humor, and caprice thrown in with the passion and logic. Violinistic clichés interact with a host of special techniques. Harmonics, glissandi, arpeggios, bariolage, quarter-tones, behind-the-bridge screeching - it's all there, plus more. I did have a kind of program and drama in mind while writing this piece, but if doesn't quite come across, then I hope Fantasies & Dances is at least good for a show, and its virtuosity worth some appreciation.
