Anthologies and Books on Reserve

Table of Contents

  1. Anthologies
  2. Books
  3. Surveys of the Social History of Music

1. Anthologies

When studying any type of music, it helps to hear or look at more than one piece to get a sense of how pieces in the same repertoire, of the same style, or by the same composer are alike or different from one another. The following anthologies are on reserve in the Music Library, and there are multiple copies of several of them in the stacks. Briscoe's anthology is particularly interesting, overthrowing the old lie that there are no great women composers by showing you their music. Fuller's anthology is superb, and you should certainly browse through it. Hoppin, Atlas, Hill, and Schulenberg includes just music from their respective periods.

2. Books

The following are specialized history texts, which cover their subjects in more detail than the broad survey in HWM.

3. Surveys of the Social History of Music

The following are part of a series (Man and Music) on the social history of music.
