M402. Information on exams

Each of the three hour exams will cover material since the last exam. Possible exam questions include

• definitions of terms and identification of names and places
• listening or score identification of the assigned pieces (composer/librettist, title, date [+ or - 5 years]), with analytical and historical questions
• listening or score identification of unassigned music, with analytical and historical questions
• explanation of a characteristic contemporary quotation and citation of relevant pieces from the assigned repertory
• short essay questions on course topics and repertory

The best way to do well on exams is to become thoroughly familiar with the course repertory and the topics we have discussed in connection with each of the pieces in lecture and in section.

The first hour exam (Monday, February 14) will cover material through lecture 13.

The second hour exam (Friday, March 25) will cover material through lecture 26.
