Midterm Essays
Please prepare the following five essays; for the midterm, I will choose three for you to write about.
1) Discuss J. S. Bach's use of Vivaldi's concertos throughout his career.
2) Discuss Vivaldi's use of programs and titles for both collections and individual works. What problems of interpretation do titles pose? How might Vivaldi have intended them to relate to his compositions?
3) Discuss the ways in which first-movement form is modified by composers from the end of the Baroque through Mozart.
4) Choose several examples from those we have studied and discuss the ways in which style is used to achieve affective and rhetorical effects.
5) Discuss the treatment of the concerto grosso in the Baroque--include in your discussion both "normal" concerti grossi and modified or hybrid forms that include aspects of the solo concerto.
