Elements of Preparation:
b. The Piece Itself
This you need to gather from a) the essay at the end of the score in NAWM, and b) from the score itself.
1. Genre or type
2. Poetic form
3. Meaning of the text
4. Outline of form
5. Tonal or modal characteristics
6. Number and type of voices or parts
7. Important musical characteristics
(texture, tessitura, text treatment, specific stylistic elements like cadential figures, chromaticism, placement of melismas, use of ornamentation, instrumentation, presence or absence of imitation, performance instructions, etc.)
6. Other subjective observations
(Useful for remembering the piece: this can be anything at all, from your own observations about the performance [from “I would kill to sound like this” all the way to “I would kill myself if I sounded like this” or whatever] to the text, the texture, the rhythm, the sound quality [“was this recorded under water?”] etc. The sillier and more personal this is, the easier it will be to attach it to the music, and thus to remember it. Of course, I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW ANY OF THIS!)
