Quiz 1

Format and material covered

The repertory will include NAWM no. 3-7, all tracks.

The questions will cover the following information:

1)       the type of chant (proper / ordinary / music drama, etc.);

2)       the specific movement by type (introit, alleluia, gloria, etc.) and beginning of text (viderunt omnes; etc.);

3)       whether it is a standard form or not, and give the form of the chant from which the excerpt is taken;

4)       I may play only the verse of a full psalm-based chant, or just the antiphon—so be prepared to identify the inner portions of the introit, gradual, alleluia, etc.;

5)       if it belongs to the mass or the office (in this case, either the Mass or the Vespers for Christmas day);

6)       in the case of the two chants for which a potential author is given, you should be able to name him or her;

7)       whether the given example is melismatic or syllabic; whether it is recitational or more melodic;

 All answers will be of a single word, or a couple of words, or maybe a simple diagram—no need to write even a complete sentence.

I will give you probably no more than 4 excerpts, about each of which I will ask up to 5 questions.  The total points will be 40, with each of the 20 questions being worth 2 points.  The grading scale will be: 36-40=A; 32-35=B; 28-31=C … I don’t even want to think about anything less than that, and I’m sure you don’t either.  Since the points are so limited, I will not use +/- grades, although I will grade on a +/- scale for tests and final, and of course for the course grade.

This format will be pretty much the same for all the quizzes—with minor variations based on the kinds of repertory involved.
