Quiz 2
Format and material covered
The format will be the same as that for Quiz 1--you will hear each example twice, and there will be several questions for each example.
The repertory will include NAWM no. 8-26, all tracks.
The questions will cover the following information:
1) the composer;
2) the title;
3) the genre (canso, Minnelied, organum (and type--melismatic, discant), motet, etc.)
4) date--this can be approximate, and can be the same as the composer's dates when that is all that is known;
5) what it is about, in general terms (i.e.: a moral critique of court life; a love song to Marion; a song about the Crusades);
6) if a piece uses another, or refers to another, in the anthology, what that reference is (i.e.: this piece uses the tenor from NAWM n. whatever);
7) what the structure of a particular example is (i.e.: a strophic song; an isorhythmic tenor motet; a substitute clausula; a canon);
8) if a style comparison with another piece is appropriate (i.e.: how Leonin's discant compares to that of later composers), I may ask about it.
All answers will be of a single word, or a couple of words, or maybe a simple diagram—no need to write even a complete sentence.
NOTE: I will give you 5 excerpts, about each of which I will ask up to 5 questions. The total points will be 40. The grading scale will be: 36-40=A; 32-35=B; 28-31=C … I don’t even want to think about anything less than that, and I’m sure you don’t either. Since the points are so limited, I will not use +/- grades, although I will grade on a +/- scale for tests and final, and of course for the course grade.
