Final exam, Essay topics

Please prepare the following essays; on the final exam, you will be asked to write on  TWO of these topics.

1)      Compare Vivaldi’s and Bach’s approaches to concerto composition.

2)      Discuss Gabrieli’s motet In ecclesiis (Schulenberg 13).  Trace the stylistic influences it shows, and place it in the context of sacred composition at the end of the 16^th and the beginning of the 17^th centuries.

3)      Trace the development of lute music from the late 16^th century to Bach.

4)      Discuss Frescobaldi’s place in the history of keyboard music.

5)      Trace the development of the oratorio as a genre.

Please note:  The exam will consist of 3 parts--

1)  5 identifications (your choice from 8)

2)  3 listening questions (as in the listening tests) taken from the last section of the course, beginning with lute music.

3)  2 essays from above list
