Energies of Musical Time:Studies of Essential Pulsatory Functionalism

- The authors attempts to demonstrate that discrete musical time (or pulsations) may be approached from a non-durational (or non-rhythmical) point of view, the basis of which he calls "pulsatory-functionalism." The theory demonstrates how certain pulsatory phenomena taking place at the level of our perception may result from the interaction of different "functional" pulsations, equal or faster than approximately MM=140. The author claims to have discovered a series of such phenomena, including "cursive" (fast) and "non-cursive" (slow) tempi, as well as a "borderline tempo" between the two, which he calls "the first pulsatory state." Among other discussions is what the author calls the arsis-thesis dichotomy, in which thesis (a "kick") determines the position of the arsis (a "kickback") pulsation. This relationship is posited as a "fundamental thesis," which can determine as many as two or three arsis pulsations. He believes that the arsis positioning is determined by the Golden Mean ratio.
