- Definition:
Since linear-notes are generated subsequent to arpeggiatied tones in Komar's theory,
the elements of a linear-pair will often be located at different structural levels.
A linear-pair is referred to as difficult if the first note
in the pair is the more background note and easy if the reverse is true.
In either case, a dissonant suspension makes the motion from the first to second
notes easier by weakening the harmonic support for the initial tone.
Other techniques for easing linear displacements include consonant suspensions, tonicization, and diatonic dissonants (Komar, 1971).
