metric expansion
- Definition:
The addition of measure(s) or hypermeasure(s)
on the musical surface in order to accomodate prolongations of
tonal events. The unexpanded version of the tonal entity, whether
it is stated literally elsewhere in the movement or at an earlier
level of reduction, is a metric prototype. See Headlam
(1985) and Schachter
(1987).
