pulsatory functionalism
- Definition:
According to Andrei Poglirowski, pulsatory functionalism is a non-durational principle of perceiving and rendering pulsations. He contends that it not the duration of a pulsation series that counts but rather their quality, e.g., whether they derives from a previous context (like an afterbeat), whether there is an ensuing pulsatory context (such as a downbeat determining and afterbeat), and whether they tend towards ensuing pulsations (like a fast appoggiatura or an anacrusis).
