- Definition:
The way in which one or more unaccented beats are grouped in relation to
an accented one. The five basic rhythmic groupings include:
iamb (unstressed/stressed),
anapest (unstressed/unstressed/stressed),
trochee (stressed/unstressed),
dactyl (stressed/unstressed/unstressed), and
amphibrach (unstressed/stressed/unstressed)
(Cooper and
Meyer, 1960).
