Definition:
Syncopation refers to a tone which enters when there is no pulse on a primary metric level and where the following beat on the primary metric level is either absent or supressed (Cooper and Meyer, 1960).
Johnson-Laird (1991) defines syncopation more generally as an onset on a metrical unit of less importance than one that intervenes prior to the next onset.
