The Beatles arrived in America on February 7, 1964, and made the first of
three consecutive appearances on the "Ed Sullivan Show" two days later.
The Ed Sullivan Theater, at 1697 Broadway, is now the Late Show with
David Letterman Theater. The Beatles stayed at the upscale Plaza Hotel,
where their comings & goings were marked by screams from frantic
teenagers (to the horror of the hotel staff). The Plaza is on Central Park
South at Fifth Avenue.

John & Yoko moved to New York in 1971 and into a small West Village
apartment at 105 Bank Street--as far removed from the trappings of stardom
as one could imagine. Lennon loved the relative anonymity New York
offered, and the ability to live some semblance of a normal life. John &
Yoko eventually settled into the Dakota Building, a famous landmark at
72nd Street and Central Park West. (The Dakota was the setting for
"Rosemary's Baby" and home to many generations of artists and stars.)

John was murdered, unbelievably, in the entryway to the Dakota on the
night of December 8, 1980, paying the ultimate price for living in a
country that cannot pass sane gun control laws.
There is a nice memorial spot called, appropriately, Strawberry Field, in
Central Park just across from the Dakota.
