Subject: Mozart String Quartet, K. 387, first movement (Ex. 6 in the IAT)
1. Make a line diagram of the exposition only showing groupings from the subphrase level up to the highest level. You need not show motives. Label the groupings using LaRue symbology. Beneath the diagram show important harmonic and tonal details (e.g., keys and harmonic events at beginnings and endings of phrases).
2. Write a one-page (maximum) narrative in which you discuss salient features of the exposition as you see them. For example, you might discuss features of the tonal structure, or the phrase structure, or the metric structure that interest you. The objective of this discussion is to communicate your ideas clearly.
Grading will be divided 60% on the quality and accuracy of the line diagram, and 40% on the quality and clarity of your narrative.
