Lectures for week 2

This week we will focus on the following compositions, all in the IAT materials:

  1. Ex. 16, pp. 127ff. Schubert Moments musicaux, Op. 94, No. 6, Allegretto only. Study for overall structure, phrase combinations and lengths, and harmonic and tonal details. Modal inflections are important in this piece for both local color and long range tonal connections.
  2. Ex. 7, pp. 84ff. Beethoven, Piano Sonata Op. 2, No. 1. This is a sonata form with a very interesting development section in terms of its connection with the opening phrase of the exposition.
  3. (Tentatively) Ex. 15, pp. 122ff. Liszt, Sonetto 123 del Petrarca. This composition is a hybrid form and is interesting in particular for its tonal structure. As in the Schubert Op. 94, No. 6, modal inflections are important locally and in the long range.
