Sycamore Hall 341
I hear and I forget; I see and I
remember; I do and I understand. (Chinese proverb)
Course Goal
To become familiar with ways that multimedia resources
can be used in music research and instruction
Course work and requirements
U523 will be an individualized course for the most part. There
will be some in-class lectures, particularly to introduce topics, but
in general you will work on your own or in small groups. Your instructor
will serve mainly as a "guide on the side."
Your primary assignments will be divided between research and
instructional applications in the form of projects:
1. Research
- A formal written paper on an approved topic dealing with the use of
computers in music research, including illustrations and an extensive
bibliography of pertinent sources on the topic; and
- A presentation to the class summarizing your paper, including an abstract
of your report and selected illustrations and bibliography in the form of a
handout for members of the class.
Some possible topics for research project
2. Instruction
- A review of instructional software, and
- Development of an
instructional application of your own, using authoring software
called Cap-Media and Toolbook II Publisher. The
instructional project will be done on a Wintel computer.

A very brief
guide to some basic Multimedia ToolBook concepts and actions
For those who have not developed a World Wide Web homepage, you
will be required to do this in addition to the other projects. You may
wish to take advantage of one or more of
the following UITS JumpStart classes (paid for by your technology
fee; see UITS's
JumpStart Page for more information):
- PowerSurfing the Web
Jan 22 and Feb 11, 5:30-8:30 pm, IMU M088
- Create a Web page using HTML (Basics)
Jan 29 and Feb 25, 5:30-8:30 pm, IMU M088
- Create a Web Page using HTML: Concept and Design
Feb 5 and Mar 4, 5:30-8:30 pm, IMU 088
- Web Graphics
Feb 19 and Mar 25, 5:30-8:30 pm, IMU 088
Also, those who are primarily Windows users will be expected to demonstrate
at least basic familiarity with the Mac OS, either by including the use
of Mac software in your research project or instructional software review
or by verifying previous use of Mac software in U521.
Grades will be based on the quality of your work throughout
the semester.
Note to MIT minors: The MIT faculty has
established a portfolio requirement in lieu of a written minor field
examination for MIT minors. See the requirements at
