Stephen Geber Stephen Geber is Head of the cello departments at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Kent/Blossom festival school. He is also a faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School; the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida; the National Orchestral Institute at the University of Maryland; the Round Top International Festival, Round Top, Texas; and the ENCORE School for Strings, Hudson, Ohio. Each May, he chairs and teaches an annual cello festival for gifted and advanced young cellists. This is a weeklong seminar in Hidden Valley/Carmel, California. Born in Los Angeles into a family of professional cellists, Mr. Geber’s teachers have included Gabor Rejto, Stephen Deak, Ronald Leonard, and Zara Nelsova. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate. From 1973-2003, Mr. Geber was the Principal Cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Prior to this position, he was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1965-73 and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music. He has taught a number of master classes throughout the United States and in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and China. Mr. Geber has been soloist with a number of leading orchestras, including many performances throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra. With this ensemble he has performed two world premieres and three Cleveland premieres for solo cello and orchestra. He has appeared extensively as a recitalist and chamber music performer with such ensembles as the Emerson, American, and Cavani String Quartets.
Stephen Geber has recorded chamber music with Vladimir Ashkenazy for London/Decco records. In August 2003, SHAR Music Company released his latest CD recording of prominent orchestral solos. Former students of Mr. Geber hold positions in nearly all of the major American orchestras, and in several leading chamber ensembles and university teaching positions.
