Angelica May began her musical life at the age of five studying violin and piano. While she was completing her piano studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart, she was able to realize her long held desire to make cello her main instrument. Soon, Pablo Casals became acquainted with her playing, accepted her as a private student, and exerted a strong influence on her--artistically, musically, and personally.

After winning the Grand Prix at the Concours International Pablo Casals, she began her concert career, which eventually brought her to the pinnacle of her profession. Countless concert tours have taken her to virtually every country in the world, playing a repertory that covers the entire literature for cello. She has recorded many works, including the cello concertos of Martinu, Dvorak, Schumann and Saint-Saens, with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vaclav Neumann.

Like her famed teacher, Pablo Casals, she has dedicated herself with great devotion to chamber music and teaching. She has played in many chamber music ensembles, and was a founding member of the Odeon Trio. She was Professor at the Conservatory of Music in Düsseldorf and in 1984 she became Professor of Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna.

She has served as juror in national and international music competitions, including the ARD Competition in Munich, the Prager Frühling competition, and many others. Her master classes for solo performance and chamber music have been highly successful.

She has received many honors, including the Smetana Medal for services to Czech music, the Bohuslav Martinu Medal, the National Service Cross of Germany, and the Award of Honor from Austria.
