Allen Winold

Allen Winold is Professor of Music (emeritus) of the School of Music of Indiana University. He came to Indiana University in 1951 as a doctoral student and graduate assistant in music theory and violin and then served as a member of the faculty and administration of the School of Music from 1956 to 1993. He taught music theory and music history and served in several administrative capacities including at various times Director of Undergraduate Studies, Coordinator of Instrumental Ensembles, Director of Publicity, Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Director of Special Programs, Director of Placement and most recently as Interim Associate Dean for Administration. As Director of Special Programs he worked with Janos Starker in the establishment and administration of the Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center and he has been a board member of the Center since its inception. He also assisted in the organization of the Third American Cello Congress.

Prior to coming to Indiana University he was assistant concertmaster and assistant conductor of the North Carolina Symphony, a member of the first violin section of the Cincinnati Symphony, and a conductor of youth orchestras in the United States and Canada. He taught at Wilmington (Ohio) College and served three years as music therapist in Columbus State Hospital.

He earned Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from the Cincinnati College of Music and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Music Theory from Indiana University. His principal teachers were Sigmund Effron and AndrČ Gertler in violin, William Primrose and Paul Doktor in viola, Willi Apel and Paul Nettl in musicology, and Eugene Selhorst and Roy Will in music theory.

Allen Winold has written 12 books on music theory and music history, and has composed and arranged works for orchestra and chamber music groups. He has given master classes and seminars in the United States, Europe and Asia, taught as guest professor at the Hochschule fur Musik at Vienna and served as a member of international competition juries.

He is married to Dr. Helga Winold, Professor of Music (cello) at Indiana University and he has four children---Claire, Erika, Bettina, and Hans, and five grandchildren---Dana, Lucas, Noah, Samantha, and Jamie.
