Performing OrganizationsThe following three major ensembles meet on a daily basis: The Indiana University Baroque/Classical Orchestra is a major ensemble whose members perform on period instruments—instruments restored to their original specifications, or copies of original 17th and 18th century instruments—which are provided by the school. The repertoire performed is selected from music composed in the 17th and 18th century. No prior experience is necessary. “Seating” rotates, and the opportunity exists for all players to gain experience both in leading and concertante playing. PLEASE NOTE: membership in the orchestra satisfies the major ensemble (X040, X060, X070) requirement. If you are interested in joining the orchestra, please contact Prof. Stanley Ritchie, MU353, 855-6735, sritchie@indiana.edu. The Pro Arte Singers, directed by John Poole, is a chamber choir which performs medieval, renaissance and baroque choral repertory. In addition to choral concerts the members perform early theatrical works and opera on a larger scale, and solo chamber music with other voices and instruments on a smaller scale. Concentus, directed by Paul Elliott, Wendy Gillespie, Eva Legêne and Nigel North, play a wide-ranging repertory of music for small and large mixed ensembles (vocal and instrumental) from all early periods. At the core of Early Music Ensembles are small ensembles of winds, brass, plucked and bowed strings which perform separately and together in combination with singers and keyboard players. Vocal, instrumental and mixed chamber music ensembles meet three times a week; the repertory is taken from all early periods. These ensembles are coached by faculty members, and performance is usually prepared from original source materials. Each student is expected to participate in chamber music during most semesters of residence. PLEASE NOTE: membership in Concentus fulfills major ensemble (X040, X060, X070) requirement. If you are interested in joining Concentus, please contact Prof. Wendy Gillespie, MU301, 855-7594, wendygil@indiana.edu. |
