Reminders from the Music Graduate Office
Graduate Students,
Here a few things to keep in mind as the Spring semester ends.
1. Don't forget to register for the summer II and/or fall semester as soon as
possible. Courses are beginning to fill up, so it's better to register sooner
rather than later. Remember that it takes 24 hours for the Music Graduate
office to process program planning sheets.
2. If you are graduating this May or August, be sure that you have submitted
an application for graduation to the Music Graduate Office. You can view your
IUCARE (degree check) at www.insite.indiana.edu under the "Students" section
to check that you have completed all of the necessary requirements for your
degree (you can also see on your IUCARE whether you have turned in an
application for graduation).
3. If you are an International student, be sure that your I-20 is in order
with the International Services office (Franklin Hall 306) before the end of
the semester.
Let us know if you have any questions or concerns about registration or
graduation.
11 April 2003: To all graduate students
Important Information about Fall registration
School of Music Graduate Students:
Registration for the fall semester began April 7. Don't wait until the last
minute to register because it could cost you a lot of time and money with
schedule adjustment and/or late registration fees, and because courses fill up
quickly.
You should have already received your copy of the Schedule of Classes in the
mail. If you did not receive your copy, check with the Office of the Registrar
(Franklin Hall 100 or 855-0121). You can also view the Schedule of Classes and
look up your registration appointment time on INSITE (http://insite.indiana.edu).
You can see information on School of Music courses on-line at
http://www.indiana.edu/~deanfac/blfal03/mus/ if the
instructor has chosen to post it. Look here for announcements, new courses,
course Web pages and other information.
We suggest you read the information at the following link before filling out
your Program Planning Sheet:
http://www.music.indiana.edu/som/grad/RegistrationTips.htm.
Program Planning Sheets are available outside the MARS office (MU 011).
Remember there is a 24-hour processing time for the planning sheets once you
turn them in to our office. After you pick up your processed Program Planning
Sheet, you can register either on-line or on the phone after your assigned
registration appointment time. See your Schedule of Classes for information
about registration procedures and fees.
The Office of the Registrar has placed all students who are not compliant with
the State's immunization policy on check list. BEING PLACED ON CHECK LIST
PREVENTS YOU FROM REGISTERING UNTIL ALL IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN
MET. For information regarding the immunization policy, contact the Office of
the Registrar or view the information on their Web site (http://registrar.indiana.edu/Services/immune.html).
If you have any questions about degree requirements, please make an
appointment to see me. Be sure to register for the fall semester before you
leave for summer vacation.

11 March 2003: To all masters and diploma students
Important information for International Students
Graduate students,
As you probably know, the Office of International Services has implemented
SEVIS, a system designed to provide information on international students and
their dependents. The new system and some new Federal regulations will affect
School of Music students in a few ways we wanted you to be aware of.
1. Final recital timing. In the past, international diploma and
master's degree students have been able to finish their coursework and then
stay for an additional semester to finish a recital without registering in any
courses. This will no longer be possible for students in the United States on
a visa. International diploma and degree students who wish to be at IU to give
a recital will have to be registered full-time during that semester, even if
the only remaining requirement is the recital.
This does not affect summer sessions. A diploma or degree student who wishes
to perform a recital in the summer session will not be required to enroll as
long as the recital course was registered for during an earlier semester.
2. Address changes. All international students must keep their local
address updated with IU, reporting any change of address within 10 days of
moving.
3. Full-time enrollment. Students may not drop below full-time
enrollment without permission from the Director of Graduate Studies
and--especially--the office of International Student Services. It is essential
to get this permission before you reduce your schedule.
The International Services office is offering information sessions with more
details about the new regulations and how it may affect international
students. To sign up for one of these session you can go to
http://www.indiana.edu/~intlcent/
and click on "My OIS". After you log in you can get information about when the
sessions are being held and you can sign up to attend one. We strongly advise
all international students attend one of these sessions.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
11 March 2003: To all doctoral students
Important information for International Students
Dear doctoral students:
As you probably know, the Office of International Services has implemented
SEVIS, a system designed to provide information on international students and
their dependents. The new system and some new Federal regulations will affect
School of Music students in a few ways we wanted you to be aware of.
1. Continuous registration. In the past, doctoral students who had
completed their course work and who were working on qualifying exams had a
one-year period in which they did not have to enroll. Beginning in the fall
semester 2003, this will no longer be possible. Those in the United States on
student visas will have to be continuously registered during the fall and
spring semesters.
To meet this requirement, doctoral students who have completed their course
work and who have applied to begin qualifying exams may enroll in a new
0-credit course, MUS G601, for two semesters. While doctoral students are
working on exams this will be considered full-time enrollment. If the
qualifying exam process takes more than 2 semesters, students needing more
time will need to register in at least one hour of document or dissertation
credit to maintain their status.
We will send out more information about the new 0-credit course with
registration information. This course will available to any qualified doctoral
student who would like to enroll in it, but it is not clear that other
authorities (banks, lenders, etc.) will consider it to be full-time
enrollment.
After you log in you can get information about when
the sessions are being held and you can sign up to attend one. We strongly
advise all international students to attend one of these sessions.
Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Auto-W Deadline
Graduate students,
The Auto-W Deadline for Spring Semester 2003 is Wednesday, March 12th (for
semester sections).
Before the Auto-W deadline you may drop a class with the permission of the
department chair and the Dean (Music Graduate Office), and you will
automatically receive a grade of "W".
After the Auto-W deadline: A student may withdraw from a course only with the
permission of the instructor, department chair, and his or her dean. You must
obtain the instructor’s and chairperson’s signatures before returning to the
Music Graduate Office for the Dean’s approval. (The chairperson’s signature is
the signature of the chairperson of the department offering the course.)
This approval is normally given only for urgent reasons related to extended
illness or equivalent distress. After the Auto-W deadline, instructors may
choose to give students either a “W” for withdrawal or an “F.”
Final Schedule Adjustment Authorization Forms are available in the Music
Graduate Office (Merrill Hall 011).
Our office hours are 9 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm, Monday through Friday.

Writing and English Courses
The following is a message from Prof. David Lasocki.
Dear students,
This spring I am continuing to offer the following classes, to returning
students or those joining us for the first time:
(1) English for Foreign Music Students
This course will review the most common areas of English in which foreign
students experience problems: grammar, syntax, punctuation, and musical
terminology.
Thursdays, 3:00-4:00 p.m., Room M263
(2) Writing about Music
This course will cover how to write well in various formats (bios, resumes,
reviews, program notes, summaries and abstracts, analyses, essays, and
papers). It should be suitable for both native speakers and foreign music
students with a good command of written English. The course is being offered
at alternate times, so that whether you are enrolled in choir or in orchestra,
I hope you will be free to attend:
Mondays, 1:25-2:25 p.m., Room M298 OR
Thursdays, 4:00-5:00 p.m., Room M263
Room M263 is in the Music Library (second floor, above the circulation desk).
Room M298 is in the Music Library building, outside the library (second
floor). The classes will begin during the SECOND week of the semester, to
allow time for your schedules to settle.
These classes are informal (no charge, no need to sign up), although I do
expect that students will make a commitment to attend for the entire semester.
Hope to see you in one (or more) of these classes.
With many thanks.

Educational Opportunity Fellowships
The University Graduate School offers
Educational Opportunity Fellowships of $1500 to certain students to help support
their graduate studies.
"The Educational Opportunity Fellowship (EOF) is designed to enable
promising students who are first generation college graduates and who do not
fare well in conventional competition for graduate fellowships. Students who
have attended marginally adequate or inadequate schools; who have been
required to work excessively while attending school; or whose social and
economic background make acquiring education an unreasonably difficult
enterprise are encouraged to apply. . . .EOF stipends are $750 per semester.
The fellowship entitles nonresident students to pay tuition at the resident
rate for up to a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester. A possible summer
award includes a $350 stipend and 6 credit hours."
Detailed information is available at
http://www.indiana.edu/~grdschl/gmo/eof2000fly.htm;

19 November 2002: To all doctoral students:
For Students who took the 10/19/02 Styles Exam
Dear doctoral students:
The results of the October 19th Styles Exam are now posted outside the door of
the Graduate Office, MU011. In the next few days we will send you a letter
with information about the exam and a detailed breakdown of your performance.
Congratulations to the many of you (48 out of 59) who passed the exam.
For those of you who did not pass, your options depend on when you began the
doctoral program. Students who entered before the fall of 2002 may take the
exam two times; beyond that they must petition for permission to take it
again. If you are in this position, please make an appointment to see me after
you receive your letter. Students who entered before the fall of 2002 may also
petition to take T545 to meet the requirement.
Students who entered in the fall of 2002 who did not pass must ordinarily take
T545. The exam system has changed recently and we are still adjusting the
process. For this reason I would be pleased to meet with any student in this
position to discuss other possibilities, including permission to take the exam
a second time in the fall of 2003.
If you are hoping to take T545 in the spring semester, you might already know
that there is a short waiting list. Do not panic. First, I expect that some
students will drop the course. Second, I will be pleased to help students who
need to take the class but are not yet able to get in. Let the dust settle for
a few days, then please get in touch with Sara Erbes or with me.
Sincerely,
Prof. Daniel R. Melamed

Spring registration update
Graduate Students,
Your opportunity to register in person at the Registrar's office will end on
Friday, November 22.
You will still be able to register either through the RegWeb system (www.regweb.indiana.edu)
or on the phone (855-1000) after that date. However, classes are filling up,
and the sooner you register, the more chance you have of getting into the
courses you need.
Remember that the Music Graduate Office requires 24 hours to process your
program planning sheet, so plan ahead. Last-minute requests will not be
granted.
If you have any questions about what to register for, please make an
appointment to speak with me.

Music Theory AI auditions - Spring 2003
Students who are
interested in being considered for an appointment as a music theory AI for the
next academic year (2003-2004) need to apply for an audition. (Current theory
AIs do not need to re-audition.) Any qualified current graduate student, or
current undergraduate student who is applying for admission to a graduate
program in the SOM for next year, may request an audition. Theory AI’s are not
given to undergraduate students.
All current students should
fill out an electronic request for an audition time at
http://theory.music.indiana.edu/ofc/aud_app.html.
You will then be contacted
about a specific time and place for the audition. Auditions for music theory
AI positions are normally given during SOM audition weekends.
The deadline to request a
music theory AI audition is January 15,
2003.
Details about the audition
are available at
http://theory.music.indiana.edu/ofc/ai_aud.html.
The audition consists of
sight singing, aural identification, keyboard sight reading, and visual
analysis (including discussion of musical materials). Applicants should not
audition unless they have very good abilities in most, if not all, of these
areas.

Auto-W Deadline
Graduate students:
The Auto-W Deadline for Fall Semester 2002 is Wednesday, October 30th (for
semester sections). Before the Auto-W deadline you may drop a class with the
permission of the department chair and the Music Graduate Office, and you will
automatically receive a grade of "W".
After the Auto-W deadline you may withdraw from a course only with the
permission of the instructor, department chair, and the Music Graduate Office.
You must obtain the instructor’s and chair’s signatures before returning to
the Music Graduate Office for approval. (Chair here means the chair of the
department offering the course.) This approval is normally given only for
urgent reasons related to extended illness or equivalent distress. After the
Auto-W deadline, instructors may choose to give students either a “W” for
withdrawal or an “F,” depending on the grade they are earning in the class.
Final Schedule Adjustment Authorization Forms, which you will need to drop a
class, are available in the Music Graduate Office (Merrill Hall 011). Our
office hours are 9 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
If you have any questions, please email (musgrad@indiana.edu), call
(855-1738), or come by the office.
14 October 2002: To all graduate students
Important registration information for Spring semester 2003
School of Music Graduate Students:
Registration for the Spring semester begins
October 24. Don't wait until the last minute to
register because it could cost you a lot of time and money with schedule
adjustment and/or late registration fees, and because courses fill up quickly.
The Schedule of Classes was sent out several weeks ago. If you did not
receive your copy, check with the Office of the Registrar (Franklin Hall 100 or
855-0121). You can also view the Schedule of Classes and look up your
registration appointment time on INSITE (http://insite.indiana.edu).
You can see information on School of Music courses on-line at
http://www.indiana.edu/~deanfac/blspr03/mus/ if the instructor
has chosen to post it. Look here for announcements, new courses, course Web
pages and other information.
Program Planning Sheets are available outside the MARS office (MU 011). Make
sure you get signatures for courses requiring authorization before you turn the
form in to our office. In most cases, we will have prior authorization for your
lessons, so a signature may not be required. Check with us before turning in
your sheet to see if you will need to get a signature for lessons. REMEMBER
THERE IS A 24-HOUR PROCESSING TIME FOR THE PLANNING SHEETS! Once you pick up
your processed Program Planning Sheet, you can register either on-line or on the
phone. See your Schedule of Classes for information about registration
procedures and fees.
The Office of the Registrar has placed all students who are not compliant
with the State's immunization policy on check list. BEING PLACED ON CHECK LIST
PREVENTS YOU FROM REGISTERING UNTIL ALL IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN MET.
For information regarding the immunization policy, contact the Office of the
Registrar or view the information on their Web site (http://registrar.indiana.edu/Services/immune.html).
If you have any questions about degree requirements, please make an

DAAD grants for study or research in Germany
Deutscher Akademischer
Austausch Dienst (DAAD) Fellowships are available for study or research in
Germany during the 2003-2004 academic year.
In general, applicants must be
U.S. or Canadian citizens. However, foreign
nationals may be eligible to apply if they have been full-time graduate students
at Indiana University for more than one year at the time of application. Foreign nationals
recently completing their baccalaureate degree who have not been enrolled in a
graduate program at Indiana
University for at least a year are not eligible for this program. German citizens
should contact DAAD directly for information regarding programs that they are
eligible to apply for.
Applicants must have
completed at least a baccalaureate degree by the beginning date of the grant to
be eligible for a Deutschlandjahr Scholarship for Graduating Seniors. Graduate
students pursuing a Masters degree or Ph.D. are encouraged to apply through
Indiana University for DAAD’s Graduate Scholarships for Study and/or Research. Students
seeking to complete their Masters degree in
Germany are particularly encouraged to apply,
and preference will be given to applicants under the age of 32. Recent Ph.D.
recipients are also encouraged to apply for a Graduate Scholarship through DAAD
if they have earned their degree within the last two years. Applicants under the
age of 35 will be given preference.
Applicants in music
performance, fine arts, architecture, and film production should be in the final
stages of a master's program and be able to complete the degree before taking up
a grant. Applicants in music must secure admission to a Musikhochschule
before their DAAD grant award becomes official. Applicants in the fine arts must
gain admission to a Kunsthochschule before their DAAD grant award becomes
official. A candidate's knowledge of German should be commensurate with the
proposed program of study or research.

Final Schedule Adjustment Reminder - Last chance for refunds
Graduate Students,
This is a reminder that this Friday, September 27, is the last chance to get a
25% refund on a dropped course. If you drop a class after this Friday you will
not receive any tuition refund.
This week is the last chance to drop and add a class for an even exchange of
fees. For example, if you drop a 3-credit class and add a different 3-credit
class the tuition you paid for the dropped class will be applied to the new
class and you will have to pay only the Final Schedule Adjustment Fees ($22
per drop, per add). If you drop a class after this Friday (9/27) and add
another class you will be responsible for the full tuition for the dropped
course and for the added course (and for the Final Schedule Adjustment Fees).
If you have any questions or concerns, please call (855-1738) or email (musgrad@indiana.edu)
the Music Graduate Office.

Doctoral grants in aid of research
Dear doctoral students (and their advisers):
Below is some information about grants in support of research available
from the University. There are two application deadlines, in October and in
March. Please note that these grants are available to students who are
formally candidates for their degrees--meaning that they have passed all their
qualifying examinations.
The information below is from the Web site
http://www.indiana.edu/~grdschl/awardmem.html#D. If you have
finished exams and are working on a document whose research could use some
financial support, consider applying. If you do apply, please turn in your
completed application and materials a week before the deadline.
Prof. Daniel R. Melamed
Director of Graduate Studies
School of Music
Indiana University
Doctoral Student Grants-in-Aid of Research
Purpose: These grants provide funding for Bloomington graduate
students for unusual expenses incurred in connection with doctoral
dissertation research, such as travel to special libraries or laboratories,
payments to consultants, the purchase of microfilm and computer data tapes,
specialized equipment, and duplication of vital materials needed for writing
the dissertation. Expenses that are not supported include typing and
duplicating of dissertations, normal living expenses, routine laboratory
supplies, and computers.
In the case of requests for equipment, the director of graduate studies
must verify that neither the equipment requested nor the funds are available
to support the research. In case the application is funded for an amount below
that necessary to purchase the equipment, the department will be responsible
for the additional funds. At the completion of the project, the equipment will
be housed in the department and made available for future research projects by
other graduate students.
Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible to apply, a student must have
been formally admitted to Ph.D. candidacy by the application deadline (the
Nomination to Candidacy form must have been approved by the Dean of the
University Graduate School). Students pursuing the M.F.A. degree or doctoral
degrees other than the Ph.D. (e.g., Ed.D. or D.M.) may also apply for a
Doctoral Student Grant-in-Aid of Research. An applicant must be enrolled
full-time on the Bloomington campus during the semester in which he or she is
applying.
Nomination Process: The application materials must be submitted to
the University Graduate School (Kirkwood Hall 111, Bloomington campus) by the
director of graduate studies. Because any group of two or more applications
from one department or school must be ranked by that department or school
before the forms are sent to the University Graduate School, the student
should notify the director of graduate studies in the department well in
advance of October 1, 2002 or March 1, 2003 that he/she will be applying for a
Doctoral Student Grant-in-Aid of Research. A student's application consists of
the following items:
1. a completed application form, including the signature of
the student as well as the signatures of the dissertation director and the
director of graduate studies;
2. two letters of recommendation: a letter of support from the
dissertation chair and a letter of support from another individual
knowledgeable about the proposed research are required (letters should
evaluate the merit of the research, the reasonableness of the proposed
expenses, and progress to date; they may be sent directly to the University
Graduate School, Kirkwood Hall 111, Bloomington campus);
3. a copy of the curriculum vitae of the applicant;
4. a copy of the abstract of the dissertation proposal (the proposal must
have been approved by the student's dissertation committee); and
5. If there is more than one application from a department, the director
of graduate studies should report the departmental ranking in the
appropriate section of the Grant-in-Aid of Research application.
Award Value: The maximum amount awarded to any student is $1,000.
If a student is funded for less than $1,000, he or she may apply in another
competition for the remainder of the $1,000. Receipts are required for
reimbursement of expenses, and should be presented to the student's department
for processing after a Grant-in-Aid of Research has been awarded.
Deadlines: October 1, 2001 and March 1, 2002.
Late applications will be returned to the department, but may be submitted
again for the next competition. Grants are announced approximately two months
after the deadline.

2 September 2002: To all graduate students
Graduate Students:
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT
The end of this week, Friday September 6, is the last day to make any
schedule changes using the RegWeb system (www.regweb.indiana.edu).
There is a $6 per session schedule change fee that is charged when you change
your schedule in RegWeb. Remember that even if you drop a class you are still
responsible for being enrolled full-time (at least 8 credits for Masters and
Doctoral students, 9 credits for PD, AD, and Visiting students).
Friday, September 6 is also the last day to get a 100% refund on a dropped
course.
Starting Monday, September 9, to change your schedule you will need to get a
Final Schedule Adjustment form from our office, collect various signatures, and
take the form to the Registrar's office. There will be a $22 schedule adjustment
fee charged per drop and per add. That means that starting next week if you drop
one class and add another you will have a total of $44 worth of schedule
adjustment fees. If you drop a class during the week of September 9 you will
receive only a 75% refund of your tuition fees unless you simultaneously add
another course with the same number of credit hours.
Please contact our office if you have any questions. Our phone number is
855-1738. Our email address is musgrad@indiana.edu.

Spring 2003 International Enhancement Grants
If you are interested in applying for a grant or have questions, please get
in touch directly with the Office of International Programs,
www.indiana.edu/~intlprog.
Spring 2003 International Enhancement Grants
Grants of up to $2,000 are available on a competitive basis for students
to pursue relevant academic or training programs in order to add or
intensify an international component of their IU degrees. Note: Grants are
not intended to support research activities.
Applicants must have an objective that can be completed over spring 2003.
The proposal must have an international focus and activities must supplement
or expand upon (and may NOT duplicate) available IU course work. Applicants
also need to provide a description of the program - a syllabus, course
description, or brochure. If the opportunity is not a regularly offered
course, a detailed summary of activities and confirmation of supervision
from a host institution faculty member or an on-site supervisor must be
provided. Note: Grants may not support participation in a formal IU overseas
study program.
Applicants for internships should clearly document (a) that they have the
requisite skills for the position, (b) the content areas that will be
addressed, and (c) the impact the experience will have on their own academic
program.
Proposals that include international travel are strongly encouraged.
Activities may not take place on the campus at which the applicant is
regularly enrolled. Priority will be given to projects that last a full
academic term.
Evaluators will consider scholastic achievement; quality of identified
program; validity and feasibility of the proposal; faculty support as
indicated by letters of reference; and impact the experience will have on
the applicant’s academic program.
Applicants may be students from any discipline, department, or campus;
must be enrolled in a program leading to a graduate degree at Indiana
University; and must have completed at least nine credit hours of graduate
course work at IU at the time of application. Students admitted to doctoral
candidacy are not eligible.
Information and application materials are available on the web at
www.indiana.edu/~intlprog.
Questions should be directed to Charlie Bankart, Office of International
Programs, Franklin Hall 311, Bloomington, IN 47405, phone (812) 855-7557, fax
(812) 855-8719, E-mail: cbankart@indiana.edu. Deadline for spring applications
