New Student Orientation

Advising  ·  Entrance Examinations  ·  Student responsibility  ·  International orientation  ·  This semester

Orientation is an important part of your academic program. Because we are such a large school, individual advising is limited during the first week of classes. Thus, the meetings provided during Orientation are essential. If you need help, send an e-mail note (musgrad@indiana.edu), call (812) 855-1738, or stop by the Music Advising & Records Services Office (MU011).

If an extreme situation prevents you from coming to Orientation, you must request permission for late arrival from the Director of Graduate Studies; you will need to document your reasons.

Advising

You will be assigned an advising time with a faculty member, the Director of Graduate Studies or the Graduate Academic Advisor. To prepare for advising, be sure you have obtained a School of Music Bulletin (handed out during orientation) and a Schedule of Classes (available in the Registrar’s Office, Franklin Hall 100). Both are important tools for planning your course schedule.

Graduate Entrance Examinations

M.A., M.M., M.M.E., M.A.T., D.M., D.M.E., AND Ph.D. STUDENTS MUST TAKE ALL PROFICIENCY EXAMS IN MUSIC THEORY AND MUSIC HISTORY & LITERATURE AT THE SCHEDULED TIMES (unless item #1 below has been satisfied). Before students will be admitted to these exams, a picture ID must be shown.

ARTIST DIPLOMA, PERFORMER DIPLOMA, VISITING, and M.S. STUDENTS are required to attend the registration information session, sign-up for an advising time and register. They are not required to take the proficiency exams.

Graduate Entrance Examinations in music history and theory may be satisfied in any of the following ways:

  1. Students may take and pass the graduate entrance exams. Each exam may be taken twice. Students must take the exams at the beginning of their first semester of enrollment; they may take them for a second time in their second semester. They may not take them after their second semester of enrollment. (Note that this includes summer session in which students are enrolled.) Exams are ordinarily given in the week before classes begin each semester.
  2. Students may enroll in and pass the graduate review courses. Students should begin enrolling in review courses not exempted as soon as possible; otherwise completion of the degree may be delayed.

Information on the proficiency exams is available here.

The Student's Responsibility (from the School of Music Bulletin)

Students have a threefold responsibility: (1) to know and satisfy the graduation requirements stated in the School of Music Bulletin; (2) to know their academic standing based on the academic standards stated in the School of Music Bulletin; and (3) to know and observe all regulations and academic calendar deadlines as stated in the Schedule of Classes, the School of Music Bulletin, and the student handbooks. Faculty and staff advisers assist students in planning a program of study to meet degree requirements, but students are responsible for meeting all degree requirements and deadlines.

International Student Orientation

All international students must check in at the International Center, located at 111 S. Jordan during their office hours upon arrival. For information about International Student Orientation, contact the International Center at (812) 855-7133; e mail: intlcent@indiana.edu; web site: http://www.indiana.edu/~intlcent.

Degree and diploma students whose first language is not English must take the Indiana University English Proficiency Examination regardless of your TOEFL score. (Visiting students are not required to take this exam.) Based on the results of these examinations, the Director of Graduate Studies will determine the appropriate course of study for each student. Such study must begin immediately and as prescribed. Contact the International Center regarding exam times and sign up. Additional information regarding English language study is available at the Center for English Language Training (CELT) located in Memorial Hall 313, (812) 855-0033.
