Orientation is an important part of your academic program. If you have any
questions about orientation or the graduate programs at IU, send an e-mail (musgrad@indiana.edu), call (812) 855-1738, or stop by the Music Graduate Office (MU011).
If an extreme situation prevents you from coming to Orientation, you must
request permission for late arrival from the Director of Graduate Studies; you
will need to document your reasons. Email
musgrad@indiana.edu if you will not be
able to attend the entire orientation week.
IU email and
computer accounts
Before you arrive for Orientation, please set up your personal IU Computer
and Email accounts.
For most students, once you
have your Indiana University ID number, you can set up your IU e-mail and
computer accounts. We suggest you do this before you arrive for Graduate New
Student Orientation. You should find your IU ID number at the bottom of your
letter of admission to the Jacobs School of Music. If your ID number is not
listed, please contact the Music Admissions office at 812-855-7998 or email them
at musicadm@indiana.edu.
See
here for detailed instructions about setting up your accounts. You
need to activate your IU Computer and Email accounts before
New Student Orientation.
Some students (in particular international students, but also some domestic
students) will not be able to set up these accounts until a few weeks before
Orientation (sometimes the University Records system is not updated with some
new students until that time). Therefore, if you are not able to set up
your accounts on your initial attempt, please try again a few weeks before
Orientation. If you try shortly before orientation and are still not able
to set up your account, please email
musgrad@indiana.edu and we will try to assist you.
This semester's orientation schedule
See the current information
here.
Advising and Registration
You will be assigned an advising time with a faculty member, the Director of Graduate Studies or the Graduate Academic Advisor
during New Student Orientation. You will be eligible to register after
your Advising appointment.
If you would like to prepare for advising, you can view your degree
requirements:
masters degrees,
doctoral degrees,
and diploma
programs.
You can view the Schedule of Classes online
here.
Keep in mind that you will register after your Advising Appointment during
Orientation, so you talk over your plans and options
with an advisor before you register.
Graduate Entrance Examinations (masters and doctoral
students only)
M.A., M.M., M.M.E., M.S. Music Education, D.M., D.M.E., and Ph.D. students must take all
proficiency exams in music theory and music history & literature at the
scheduled times during orientation. Before students will be admitted to these exams, a picture ID must be shown.
Artist Diploma, Performer Diploma, Visiting, and M.S. Opera Stage
Direction students are not required to take the proficiency exams.
Detailed information on the proficiency exams is available
here.
Keyboard placement hearing (masters
and doctoral students only)
On the first day of Orientation, most masters and doctoral students will be
assigned a keyboard placement hearing time for either later in the week or early
in the semester. This individual appointment will be for you to find out
where your current skills on the piano stand in relation to the requirements of
the keyboard proficiency exam. You do not need to prepare for the keyboard
placement hearing. Detailed information about the Keyboard Proficiency
Exam (which is not the same as the keyboard placement hearing) can be found
here.
Students in the Early Music, Guitar, Harp, Jazz Studies, Organ, Piano, and Musicology departments
take the keyboard proficiency directly with their department, so they do not
need to participate in the keyboard placement hearing during Orientation.
Students in the Opera Stage Direction department do not need to pass
a keyboard proficiency exam for their degree requirements.
Ensemble Auditions
Masters and Diploma students are required to enroll in a major ensemble every
semester. Ensemble auditions take place either during orientation week or
during the first week of classes (depending on your area).
Choral Auditions: If you have
questions about Choral Auditions, contact the Choral Office at (812) 855-0427.
String Auditions:

855-9084.
Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion auditions:

twieligm@indiana.edu.
Band auditions:
If you have questions about band auditions, please contact the Band Department at
(812) 855-1372 or

Instrument Rental and Lockers
Lockers
Information about all locker rentals other than
Double Bass and Tuba can be found
here
(the Music Facilities Office web site).
Lockers are provided for Double Bass and Tuba from
MA410 (Instrument Rental office)
Instrument Rental
All Jacobs School of Music instruments/accessories
can be checked out of MA410, and only used for a course which would require the
use of a Jacobs School of Music instrument.
All instruments/accessories can be used only by the person checking out (signing
the contract) for that particular instrument/accessory.
Within twenty four hours from the time a person requests an
instrument/accessory, they can pick up a contract and fill the contract out
and secure the instrument/accessory.
All Instruments/Accessories are rented (a new contract each time) a semester
[rental period] at a time - Fall, Spring, SSI & II.
All persons who are taking a class that requires an instrument/accessory who are
not registered through music school as a
music major etc.. will pay an added $50 user fee (billed through the Bursars
office).
Jacobs School of Music regulations/rules for instrument/accessory use may be
found on the bulletin board across from MA410,
and a condensed version on the contract each person signs before acquisition of
an instrument/accessory from MA410.
Parking Permit and Student ID card
You will get your Parking Permit (if you want
one) and Student ID card during Graduate New Student Orientation. It is not
possible to get either item until after you register for classes. You will
register for classes on Wednesday, August 27 (for students starting in the fall).

Permits and Student ID cards, you may go to the following web sites:

you will receive information about that Orientation from the International
Admissions office. International Student Orientation usually takes place
two weeks before classes begin. You can read about International
Student Orientation
here.
Degree and diploma students whose first language is not English must take the Indiana University English Proficiency Examination regardless of your TOEFL score. (Visiting students are not required to take this exam.)
The exam is part of International Student Orientation.

The Student's Responsibility (from the
Jacobs School of Music Bulletin)
Students have a threefold responsibility: (1) to know and satisfy the graduation requirements stated in the
Jacobs School of Music Bulletin; (2) to know their academic standing based on the academic standards stated in the
JSoM Bulletin; and (3) to know and observe all regulations and academic calendar deadlines as stated in the Schedule of Classes, the
JSoM Bulletin, and the student handbooks. Faculty and staff advisers assist students in planning a program of study to meet degree requirements, but students are responsible for meeting all degree requirements and deadlines.
