LAMC Recent Donations
- The LAMC has received a large donation of scores
from Ediciones Mexicanas de Musica. The donation was made possible through
a grant from the U.S.-Mexico Fund for Culture and contains most of the
works in EMMs catalog. All the scores feature the careful and elegant
editions that became the trademark of this prestigious publisher. The
Latin American Music Center and the Music Library of Indiana University
are profoundly thankful to the individual artists and government officials
who made this donation possible. The LAMC staff and the School of Music
of Indiana University congratulate Ediciones Mexicanas de Musica for
their work and impact in the artistic life of Mexico and their contribution
to the world of music. Ediciones Mexicanas de Musica was established
in February 6, 1947. The funding members were Spanish composers Rodolfo
Halffter, Adolfo Salazar (music critic and essayist), and Jesus Bal
y Gay, with Mexican composers Carlos Chavez, Blas Galindo, Jose Pablo
Moncayo, and Luis Sandi. Thanks also to the generosity of the Mexican
actors Samuel and Benito Alazraki, the EMM was able to afford a low
rent space for the offices during the first two years of operations.

- In January, 2001, the LAMC received yet another
valuable donation, this time from Quindecim recordings. The donation
was made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Quindecim recording's
chief executive officer, José Luis Rivera. The donation included
forty-nine of the titles currently released on Compact Disc by this
entrepeneuring company that in the last few years has emerged as one
of Mexico's leading recording companies of Mexican and Latin American
classical music. The materials included in this donation range from
Mexican Baroque Music and standard repertoire works including the complete
guitar works by Manuel M. Ponce, to exciting releases of unknown string
quartets, Cuban music for piano and arrangements for string quartet
and bandoneon of works by Piazzola, featuring the celebrated Cuarteto
Latinoamericano and Cesar Olguin on the bandoneon.
In October 2001, the LAMC received a valuable donation
from Pan American Musical Art Research, Inc. (PAMAR)
in the person of its executive director, Jan Hanvik. PAMAR, a non-profit
organization devoted to promoting better understanding among the various
countries and cultures of the Americas, is a resource center for artistic
exchange, primarily in the contemporary performing arts. The generous
donation of 55 individual items was comprised mostly of scores and included
several composers not yet represented in the LAMC collection. In addition
to a variety of works (for choir, piano, voice, chamber ensemble, orchestra
and electronics) from several Latin American countries (including Argentina,
Bolivia, Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico and Venezuela) and dating from the
late eighteenth century to the present, the donation also included examples
of anthologies, books, composer catalogs, instrumental methods, and
program booklets

Recent donations
In January, 2002, the LAMC received another
substantial donation from Quindecim recordings. This time, materials
range from works by prominent Latin American composers such as Revueltas,
Ponce, Guastavino and others to many exciting, previously unreleased
materials, including Latin American electroacustic music, operas, cantatas,
art songs, and other genres. The recordings feature performances by
both well established Mexican artists including cellist and IU alumni
Álvaro Bitrán, flutist Horacio Franco and pianists Alberto
Cruz Prieto and Gustavo Rivero Weber, as well as emerging musicians
such as pianist and IU alumni Arturo Nieto-Dorantes.
Quindecim has recently launched its long-awaited webpage, available
at www.quindecim.com.mx. In
addition to information about its complete catalogue, the webpage includes
contact information for purchasing recordings.
