Notions and Notation of Freedom in Music: from simple Ornamentation to Free Improvisation
      Timothy Olsen (USA)

Using examples from my own works as well as the works of G.F. Handel (Organ Concertos, 1730's-40's), John Cage (Concert for Piano and Orchestra, 1957-58), and Lukas Foss (Renaissance Concerto, 1985), I would like to talk about the notion and notation of freedom in music--from simple ornamentation to free improvisation--and the difficulty many contemporary composers face: devising a notational system which can efficiently, completely, and (hopefully) eloquently express one's compositional ideas.

The Orchestra of Traditional Instruments of Bolivia
