Contemporary Vocal Ensemble Concert
Choral Songs from Latin America
Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble presents an evening of
Choral Songs from Latin America on Sunday, October 26. The concert begins
at 8:00pm and takes place in Auer Recital Hall of the Simon Music Building,
in the corner of Third and Jordan.
Directed by Carmen Helena Téllez, the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble
will perform works by Carlos Chávez, Guido Lopez-Gavilán,
Roberto Sierra, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. The majority of the repertoire belongs
to the early 20th-century nationalist style, which used elements from the
popular music of the respective countries, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and
Brazil. One of the works, Noneto--A Rapid Impression of All Brazil--is a
landmark in the production of Heitor Villa-Lobos, perhaps the most popular
Latin American composer of the century. The works by Lopez-Gavilán
and Sierra, although written in the last 10 years, also reflect the composers'
mastery of dance rhythms of Afro-Cuban origin.
