Results of the Rodrigo Riera Guitar Composition Competition Biennial Competition

The Jury of the Third International Guitar Rodrigo Riera Composition Competition has awarded the Prize of $10,000 to the work:

Prelude, Choral and Fugue by Alexandre Eisenberg

Mr. Eisenberg was born in 1966 in Brazil and is currently pursuing a Doctor in Music degree at Indiana University's School of Music. The jury praised the freshness and originality of his work, which imbued traditional genres such as the prelude, the choral and the fugue, as well as the idiomatic brilliance of the guitar writing.

Five Honorable Mentions were given to the following composers and works, all of which reached the finals (in Alphabetical Order):

John Anthony Lennon (USA), for "Zingari" Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra
Fernando Maglia (Argentina), for "Los Colores del Cielo" for solo guitar
Richard Peaslee (USA), for "Music for a Summer Evening" for guitar and string quintet
DJ Sparr (USA) for "Guitar Folio", for guitar and chamber orchestra
Juan Trigos (Mexico), for "Ricercare VI" for guitar and ensemble

Seventy works were presented under pseudonyms from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Ucraine, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The jury, formed by composers Ana Lara (Mexico), Don Freund (USA, previous winner) and Federico Ruiz (Venezuela) announced the results on Sunday afternoon, during the closing concert of the Festival de Agosto. Both the Festival and the Competition are sponsored by Proyecto Cultural Mavesa in Caracas, a cultural enterprise of the MAVESA Company. The next competition is scheduled for 2001 and will be announced by the Latin American Music Center as soon as the guidelines are available.
