INTER-AMERICAN COMPOSITION WORKSHOPS

Percussion in Latin American Music

A Workshop for Composers, Arrangers and Percussionists

DATES:

Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14, 2001

DESCRIPTION:

The participants will learn about the rhythmic patterns and function of many percussion instruments in Latin American popular music, and learn and experience the relationship of these patterns with other music instruments associated with the genres, presented through sessions in composition, arranging and percussion practice. The workshop will also deal with concert music which percussion language derives or is inspired in popular music.

CLINICIANS:

Paulo Días: Brazilian keyboardist and arranger, former pianist and arranger for Chico Buarque, Leni Andrade, Joyce, Nana Caymmi, Moraes Moreira, Dias Gomes and others.

Gerardo Dirié: Argentinean composer, Assistant Director of the Latin American Music Center and Director of the Latin American Popular Music Ensemble at Indiana University

Andrew Lázaro: Puerto Rican percussionist and arranger, percussion faculty and director of the Latin Jazz ensemble at the Conservatorio de Puerto Rico

Ricardo Lorenz: Composer-in-residence of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra "Armonia" Residency project. Commissioned composer of the Ravinia Festival.

SCHEDULE:

Classes will meet for 5 sessions each day:

8:30 to 10:00am

Workshop I (Lazaro - Friday; Dias ÐSaturday)

10:30 to 12:00 noon

Workshop II (Lazaro & Lorenz ÐFriday; Dias and guests -Saturday)

Lunch Break

1:30 to 3pm

Time assigned for participants to work on their examples and charts.

3:30 to 5:30

Workshop III (Reading and practice sessions)

Dinner Break

8:00 to 9:30

Special Lectures and Presentations. Topics will cover the use of Latin American popular music percussion in other music styles by Latin American composers.

APPLICATIONS:

The workshop is aimed primarily to composers, arrangers, and percussionists. However, students and professionals from the areas of music education, ethnomusicology, conducting, and band will also enjoy and benefit from the contents of all the sessions.

Application deadline: June 1, 2001

Notification of acceptance: June 25, 2001

Tuition: Active participants $ 400, Auditors $ 200

* *Participants will be actively involved in composing, arranging, writing exercises and playing percussion and other instruments, with individualized attention from the clinicians.

Audition:

Active participants only: submit a one-page resume. Composers and arrangers should also submit two music scores, including a recording thereof if possible.
