Abstract:

The profile in community of what we call now a "composer" has changed substantially through time in Western and Westernized societies. Composers in Colombia cannot be excluded from that general phenomenon, and the peculiarities of the Colombian cultural environments have been essential in shaping a specific relationship between Colombian composers and their community. Taking examples from four different historical periods, this paper examines this relationship from the XVI to the XX century, and the resulting different profiles we find amongst composers in present day Colombia.
