Abstract:

One of the most common practices of the community of modern nationalist composers in Latin America was the utilization of vernacular forms in their own creations, as a source material of non-Western European origin that could derive into innovative musical languages. This utilization ranged from direct assimilation for the concert stage through musical arrangements, often tied to the composer's contribution to the formation of a national musical identity; to a complete redefinition and reconstruction of the source material within a very personal musical language.

This presentation analyzes the case of the Argentinean malambo in the music of Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983). It will include an examination of the musical characteristics of the traditional malambo and compares them to Ginastera's representations and manipulations. The presentation will also evaluate and classify the manifestations of the Ginasterian malambo throughout his compositional output.
