Seventh Annual Competition in the

Performance of Music from

Spain and Latin America

 

Semi-Final and Final Rounds:

The Latin American Music Center and the Spanish Resource Center at Indiana University announce the Winners of the 7th Annual Competition in Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America, which took place last April 3 and 4. The honorable judges were Professors Ernesto Bitetti, Ricardo Lorenz-Abreu, Fred Hammond, Carlos Montané, Alfonso Montecino and Juan Orrego Salas. Professor Carmen Helena Téllez, Director of the Latin American Music Center, was the Moderator. José Antonio Laguna, Director of the Spanish Resource Center, acted as Observer.

 

1. Open Interpretation Category: Two prizes were awarded for the best performances of the chosen repertoire presented by vocal and instrumental soloists.

 

The First Prize in the Open Category in the amount of US $900 was awarded to Melanie Mooney, flutist, for her interpretations of works by Roberto Gerhard, Astor Piazzolla and Juan Orrego Salas. She was accompanied by David Cruz (cello) and Nicolás Farruggia (guitar).

 

The second prize of US $600 was awarded to José Andrés Saborío for performances of works by Leo Brower, Joaquín Rodrigo and Juan Orrego Salas.

 

2. Special Focus Category: This category rotates every year among voice, the different instrumental families, and chamber ensembles. The Special Focus Category of the 2004 was assigned to Chamber Ensembles, both vocal and instrumental, in any combinations.

 

The first and only prize in the Special Focus Category in the amount of US $1,600 was awarded to the Clarinet Quartet formed by Jorge Montilla, Salvador Oriola, Jennifer Bailey and Daniel Healton..

 


3. Juan Orrego-Salas Prize
: In addition to the prizes above, the 7th Annual Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America celebrated Juan Orrego-Salas's 85th birthday by offering a special prize for the best performance of his music. This special prize of $400 was awarded to Melanie Mooney for her interpretation of Orrego Salas' Serenata for flute and piano.

The Annual Competition in Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America seeks to promote the knowledge and performance of concert music from Spain and all countries in Latin America. The competition is open to vocal and instrumental soloists, chamber music ensembles, and conductors who are currently registered in a performance program at the Indiana University School of Music. Winners of previous editions of the competition cannot participate.

 

All prize winners will record their repertoire or a selection thereof for a documentary compact disc produced by the Latin American Music Center and supported by the Spanish Resource Center. They will also perform one or more special concerts celebrating the competition on dates and places to be arranged by the Spanish Resource Center and produced by the Embassy of Spain.
