the

Seventh Annual Competition in the

Performance of Music from

Spain and Latin America

Semi-Final and Final Rounds:

April 3 and 4 , 2004

Indiana University School of Music
Merrill Recital Hall

I. Objectives:

The Annual Competition in Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America seeks to promote the knowledge and performance of concert music from Spain and all countries in Latin America.

The competition is open to vocal and instrumental soloists, chamber music ensembles, and conductors who are currently registered in a performance program at the Indiana University School of Music. Winners of previous editions of the competition cannot participate.

In 2004 we will celebrate the 85th birthday of Juan Orrego Salas, founder of the Latin American Music Center, and he will be honored with a special prize for the best performance of his music.

II. Prizes:

For the 2004 Edition, the Competition has two Prize Categories and one Special Prize:

1. Open Interpretation Category
: Two prizes will be awarded for the best performances of the chosen repertoire by a vocal or instrumental soloist A soloist may be assisted by different collaborating performers during his or her program. The prize will be awarded nominally to the soloist.

The first and second prize in the Open Category will be US $900 and US $600, respectively.

2. Special Focus Category: This category rotates every year among voice, the different instrumental families, and chamber ensembles. The Special Focus Category of the 2004 is assigned to Chamber Ensembles, both vocal and instrumental, in any combinations.

The minimum numbers of performers for ensembles without conductor is two, while the minimum number of performers for works requiring a conductor is seven. The maximum number of performers in an ensemble is twelve.

A core ensemble of at least two performers, or a conductor, may prepare a program involving different assisting performers for different pieces. If this is the case, the core ensemble will be identified as the competitors and will remain the same throughout the program. The prize will be awarded to the core ensemble or the conductor.

Special situations will be examined on a case-by-case basis by writing to lamc@indiana.edu. Given the potential fluidity of chamber music personnel, students are encouraged to submit their proposals for consideration.

The first and only prize in the Special Focus Category will be US $1,600.

3. Juan Orrego Salas Prize
: In addition to the prizes above, the 7th Annual Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America will celebrate Juan Orrego Salas's 85th birthday by offering a special prize for the best performance of his music. This special prize may be awarded to any of the winners in the Open or Special Focus categories, or to a different soloist or ensemble.

The Juan Orrego Salas prize will be US $ 400.

III. Prize-Related Activities:

1. CD Recording: All prize winners will record their repertoire or a selection thereof for a documentary compact disc produced by the Latin American Music Center and supported by the Spanish Resource Center, of 74-78 minutes of duration.  Therefore, the students entering the competition must check that they can be available to record, should they win, between May 1st and May 15, 2004. At that point they will also be asked to provide a publicity photo and a biography.

The Latin American Music Center will compile the repertoire for the CD on the basis of thematic unity, stylistic balance, and length. No guarantees can be offered that the CD will include all the repertoire performed in the competition, but all efforts will be made in this regard.

2. Concert Performances: First prize winners in the Open and Special Focus categories may be asked to perform one or more special concerts celebrating the competition on dates and places to be arranged by the Spanish Resource Center after April 2004. Depending on circumstances, second prize winners and/or winners of the Juan Orrego Salas prize may be asked to perform as well.

IV. Repertoire Requirements:

Competitors must compile a short recital of two or more works by Spanish and Latin American composers with the following characteristics:

a.       Total combined duration of the recital: minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 40 minutes.

b.      The recital must include at least one work by a Spanish composer and at least one work by Juan Orrego Salas (Chile, 1919) as their Latin American selection, chosen from the solo or chamber works by the composer listed in Appendix I.

Performers whose instrument or core ensemble are not represented on the list of solo or chamber works by Orrego Salas may request a special waver and participate in the competition by including at least one work by a Spanish composer and at least one work by a Latin American composer (born in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, or Venezuela). Waver requests should be included as part of the application..

c.       The recital also must be stylistically varied: At least one of the works must clearly reflect Spanish and/or Latin American regional styles and genres. At least one of the works must reflect international modern compositional styles and/or techniques. Even though the output of Juan Orrego Salas belong to the international modern style, there are also examples of the former. If you have any questions about style, please write to lamc@indiana.edu and we will assist you.

d.      Arrangements will be acceptable only for instruments for which original compositions cannot be found, and which use arrangements in modern professional concert practice. Students are advised to favor original works and to carefully gauge the quality of arrangements, since program selection will be a determining factor when awarding the prizes.

e.       Given that a competitor can potentially record his/her repertoire, the following works cannot be programmed for the 2004 competition:

·        Any works originally for solo and orchestra, unless it is arranged by the composer for recital programming.

·        The works which have been recorded by previous competition winners in the last four years either in the original version or in arrangements for other instruments (see Appendix II). Works by Orrego Salas, however, may be programmed again and are excepted from this rule.

The applicants are encouraged to take full advantage of the resources of the Latin American Music Center and discuss their intended program with us, by writing to lamc@indiana.edu or if preferred, by requesting an appointment with our Research Coordinator Luiz Fernando Lopes at lflopes@indiana.edu
