Image: Carlos MontaneCelebrate this year's Valentine's Day with a concert showcasing some of the most romantic love songs from Cuba. Titled "Canciones de mi tierra (Songs of My Homeland)," this faculty concert sponsored by the Latin American Music Center will feature professor Carlos Montané (tenor), the first Cuban singer to perform a leading role with the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Charles Webb (piano), whose distinguished career as a performer and former Dean of the Indiana University School of Music needs no introduction. They will be accompanied by guests Laura Rey (soprano) and Nelson Martinez (baritone).

image: Charles WebbStemming from the period between 1910 and the 1930s, when Cuba was no longer a Spanish colony but rather an American protectorate, the programmed songs include well-known hits such as "La Bayamesa" by Sindo Garay; "Lágrimas negras" by Miguel Matamoros, and "Siboney" by Ernesto Lecuona. Even though Cuba and the United States are currently estranged bedfellows, during that period Latin talent, sensuality, and pathos coupled with the American recording and movie industries were instrumental in transforming the Cuban bolero into an internationally recognized genre and the island's main vocal export.
