The Latin American Popular Music Ensemble (LAPME) presents

"From the Mountains and the Plains: Music from Colombia and Venezuela"

with guitarist Aquiles Báez and percussionist/pianist Gonzalo Grau
in Auer Hall on Sunday, November 18, 2007, at 7:00 p.m.
(Please note different time than previously announced!)

posterFollowing the recent success as partners in the collegiate premiere of Golijov’s opera Ainadamar, the Latin American Popular Music Ensemble is presenting yet another intriguing program this fall, “From the Mountains and the Plains: Music from Colombia and Venezuela.” LAPME will be joined in the performance by the celebrated Venezuelan musicians Aquiles Báez and Gonzalo Grau.

The program will include a variety of genres: The selections will illustrate musical and cultural commonalities as well as distinct differences between the two countries. Colombia and Venezuela are both extremely diverse geographically and LAPME’s program will explore the multitude of styles, genres, and traditions that have been shaped as a result of this distinct topography.

As in previous projects, LAPME will once again have the pleasure of working with accomplished artists in the days before the concert, and the students in the ensemble will perform side-by-side with the guest artists:

Gonzalo Grau is a native of Venezuela who now lives in New York. A highly versatile musician, his skills as a pianist, percussionist, and arranger have made him a sought-after musician who has performed on more than 50 albums. As a flamenco percussionist, he has performed with a variety of Spanish musicians, including Antonio Granjero, La Tania, La Conja, Pedro Cortés, Jesus Montoya, Edwin Aparicio, Chuscales, Omayra Amaya, and Alejandro Granados. As a composer and arranger, he has collaborated with the Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov in the writing of La Pasión Según San Marcos, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2001, and the Ainadamar opera, which won a Grammy Award in 2007.

Guitarist Aquiles Báez, also a native of Venezuela, is an award winning guitarist and composer who incorporates a variety of influences in his music. Critiques have called him “an example of musical globalization,” a quote that accurately describes Báez successful blending of Latin American popular music elements with traits of jazz and classical music. As a result, Báez has been invited to perform with Paquito de Rivera; Farred Haque; John Patitucci; Ilan Chester; Mike Marshall; Giora Feidman, and has appeared in concerts with the Ensamble Gurrufio; Worlds of Guitars; the Boston Symphony; Simon Bolivar; and Bach Academy Orchestras. Báez has previously been a faculty member at the Berklee College of Music, and he now operates as a freelance musician based in New York.
