The Latin American Music Center is very pleased to announce the results of

The Eleventh Annual Competition in the Performance
of Music from Spain and Latin America

January 26 and 27, 2007
Special Instrumental Focus: Guitar

Winners:

Open Interpretation Category

FIRST PRIZE ($1200)
Yeon Ji Yun (cello), student of Janos Starker,
for her performance of Gaspar Cassadó’s Suite for Cello Solo,
and Ástor Piazzolla’s Milonga del angel and La muerte del ángel.

SECOND PRIZE ($800)
Ricardo de la Torre, (piano), student of André de Groote,
for his performance of Manuel Ponce’s Preludio y fuga sobre un tema de Haendel,
Heitor Villa-Lobos’s “Impressões seresteiras” from Ciclo brasileiro,
Lorenzo Fernandez’s “Moda” from Suíte brasileira No. 2,
Rodolfo Halffter’s Dos sonatas de El Escorial,
and Samuel Zyman’s Two Motions in One Movement.

Solo Guitar Category

FIRST PRIZE ($1000)
Nemanja Ostojic (guitar), student of Ernesto Bitetti,
for his performance of Isaac Albéniz’s “Asturias (Leyenda),
"the first movement from Antonio José’s Sonata for Guitar,
and Leo Brouwer’s Sonata for Solo Guitar.

SECOND PRIZE ($500)
Maja Radovanlija (guitar), student of Ernesto Bitetti,
for her performance of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Étude No. 11 and Preludes Nos. 3 and 5;
Antonio Lauro’s “El Marabino,” “Natalia,” and “Carora” from Valses venezolanos;
and Joaquín Turina’s Sonata, Op. 61.

The JACQUES KLEIN PRIZE for the best interpretation of Brazilian piano music
has not been awarded this year but will be doubled for next year’s competition.

Jury
Guest professors Elias Barreiro from Tulane University, Alejandro Escuer from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and Fred Hammond from the University of Indianapolis; and Indiana University Jacobs School of Music professors Ernesto Bitetti, Erick Carballo, Arnaldo Cohen, Don Freund, Luke Gillespie, Espen Jensen, Teresa Kubiak, Luiz Fernando Lopes, Kathryn Lukas, Elzbieta Szmyt, and David Ward-Steinmann; with moderator Carmen Helena Téllez, director of the Latin American Music Center, and observer Jacobo Mir, education advisor of the Embassy of Spain.

The Winners will record a documentary CD that will be featured here.
