The Otto Mayer-Serra Prize for Music Research

 

Instrumenta Oaxaca, Gobierno del Estado de Oaxaca, Fundación para las Letras Mexicanas,  Coordinación de Difusión Cultural UNAM, Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and PAUTA

 

Purpose

To help support research on Latin American music in its creative, expressive and reception aspects, both within Latin America and abroad.

 

Prize

A  single, undivided prize of 5,000 USD; the prize-winning essay will be considered for publication in a scholarly journal.

 

Eligibility

All scholars, regardless of age, nationality or place of residence.

 

Administration

The winner will be selected by a committee of five outstanding scholars, nominated by Instrumenta Oaxaca, who will judge the nominations based on originality, scholarly rigor, and pertinence of the theoretical approach and methodology. The names of the committee members will be made public after a decision has been reached. Their decision may not be appealed. The prize may be withheld by decision of the committee. The committee may disqualify any participant who does not meet the requirements established by this call.

The winning author will submit musical examples and illustrations in TIFF (300dpi) and the text in Word format. The author will be responsible for arranging the corresponding permits for publication.

 

The winner of the award will be announced in March 2008. The prize will be awarded at a place determined by Instrumenta Oaxaca. Travel to this location and lodging for the winning author will be covered by Instrumenta Oaxaca.

 

 

Application process

A completed application will consist of the following:

 

  1. Six copies of the article, signed with a pseudonym. The article must be 20-40 pages long, including musical examples, graphics and references, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font. The article must be in Spanish. If the article was written in another language the original must also be submitted, indicating the name of the translator. The article must be unpublished and may not have received any previous awards.
  2. A CD containing a backup of the article in PDF.
  3. An envelope marked with the pseudonym, enclosing a 2-page curriculum vitae, with the name, date of birth, address and email address of the applicant. Only the envelope corresponding to the winning submission will be opened.
