2002 Subtropics Festival in Miami
Selected Miami's 2001 Best Festival by Miami New Times,
SFCA's Subtropics, Miami's Experimental Music Festival is one of the
premiere showcases of avant-garde and experimental music outside of
New York City.
Subtropics, held March 2-30, 2002 will present over 30
artists in performances at numerous locations throughout Miami and Miami
Beach.
The Festival spans over three weeks featuring Meredith
Monk & Ann Hamilton, Gustavo Matamoros, Io [David Font], Jacqueline
Humbert, Robert Ashley, Sam Ashley, Alfredo Triff, Ned Rothenberg, George
Tegzes, Alice Malloy, Ed Potokar and more.

2002 also marks the release of Subtropics' first experimental
music CD produced at SFCA's Sound Arts Workshop in collaboration with
Elegua Records. Subtropics Vol 1: Breath features live performances
by new music icons John Cage, Earle Brown, Robert Dick and Jon Gibson,
as well as Thomas Buckner's performance of Alvin Lucier's Music for
Baritone and Slow Sweep Pure Wave Oscillators and works by Miami-based
artists Sonny Mao & Needle and Gustavo Matamoros. The CD will be
on sale at all Subtropics events.
This program is made possible with the support of the
Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council and the Board of City Commissioners,
the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the
Board of County Commissioners and the State of Florida Division of Cultural
Affairs.
