I am writing to inform you about an opportunity to compose one of the "Crumb Commissions" in honor of George Crumb on the occasion of his 75th birthday. This opportunity is being offered to all composers who apply to be full participants in this summer's Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, which I direct. The dates of the symposium, which is held at the University of Oregon, are June 29 through July 9. George Crumb will be the composer-in residence for the symposium and a three-concert series at the festival will present the "Crumb Commissions" as well as music by George and his son, David. The ensemble- in-residence will be the acclaimed new music group, Third Angle (Ron Blessinger, director).
Composers may apply to the symposium in any of three categories:
1) AS FULL PARTICIPANT/NEW WORK--to compose a
new commissioned work in honor of George Crumb
for his 75th birthday;
2) AS FULL PARTICIPANT/PRE-EXISTING WORK--to have
a pre-existing work performed as part of the
Crumb celebration;
3) AS AN AUDITOR--who will participate in ALL of
the components of the symposium, but will not
have a work performed on the concert series.
The components of the ten-day symposium are: daily seminars in which each participant will give a presentation about his or her music; sessions with George Crumb (composer-in-residence) and David Crumb (composer-in-residence); a special session with Krzysztof Penderecki , the festival's composer-in- residence; attendance of rehearsals and festival concerts (free tickets) including a concert of Penderecki's music conducted by the composer; performances of music by full participants on a three-concert series; sessions with featured guest performers and conductors at the festival, and a special birthday celebration for George Crumb (a party between two of our concerts).
