Every two years, Havana city is swollen with passion for a marvelous instrument, the guitar. In 1982 Havana opened its doors for the first time to this event, which constituted the preliminaries of what nowadays is an integral component of the Cuban musical life.

This Festival is artistically directed and headed by Master Leo Brouwer –founding personality and corner stone of the event. It has called together renown professors and players from Cuba and the rest of the world, such as: John Williams, Costas Cotsiolis, Paco de Lucía, Manolo Sanlúcar, Jesús Ortega, Robert Aussel, Alirio Díaz, Vicente Amigo, Ichiro Suzuki, Pepe Romero, Eliot Fisk, Timo Korhonen, Pavel Steidl, Garreth Walter, Joaquín Clerch, Alvaro Pierri, Eli Kassner, Shin-Ichi Fukuda, Víctor Pellegrini, Paolo Paolini, Eduardo Fernández, Guitar Quartet, and others. Robert Vidal, one of the world's great personalities of the guitar, said: "Leo's influence has been like a lighthouse, a focus gathering here all these players from all these countries" . Costas Cotsiolis stated: "In my opinion, if this Festival and Contest is not the best of the world, at least it is one of the most important ones. Personalities with worldwide artistic authority and renown prestige are here; Leo Brouwer is here…" . Juan Helguera expressed: "Such far-reaching biennial Festival deserves our support, respect, admiration and simpathy. The moral strength of the convoker nation has made this possible” .

Along these 11 editions, there have been 36 winners . At present, many of the winners have become international top figures.

CONCURSO Y FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE GUITARRA DE LA HABANA.

Cada dos años La Habana se corona de amor por ese instrumento maravilloso que es la guitarra. Desde 1982 abrió sus puertas al primero de una serie que hasta hoy permanece enraizado ya en la vida musical cubana.

Presidido y dirigido artísticamente por el Maestro Leo Brouwer -fundador y gestor del evento- ha convocado a reconocidos profesores e intérpretes nacionales y extranjeros como: John Williams, Costas Cotsiolis, Paco de Lucía, Manolo Sanlúcar, Jesús Ortega, Robert Aussel, Alirio Díaz, Vicente Amigo, Ichiro Suzuki, Pepe Romero, Eliot Fisk, Timo Korhonen, Pavel Steidl, Garreth Walter, Joaquín Clerch, Alvaro Pierri, Eli Kassner, Shin-Ichi Fukuda, Víctor Pellegrini, Paolo Paolini, Eduardo Fernández, Guitar Quartet, entre muchos más. Otro grande del mundo de la guitarra como Robert Vidal expresó: “ La influencia de Leo ha sido como un faro, un centro de atención para que se hayan reunido aquí intérpretes de tantos países. ” Costas Cotsiolis ha dicho: “ Soy de la opinión que este concurso y festival si no es el mejor del mundo, es, cuando menos, uno de los más importantes. Aquí están personalidades de reconocido prestigio y autoridad artística de la guitarra mundial, aquí está Leo Brouwer… ”. Por su parte Juan Helguera apuntó: “ Un festival bienal que logra tal hazaña, despierta nuestro apoyo, admiración y simpatía, y lo ha logrado gracias a la reciedumbre moral del país que lo convoca ”.

El Concurso en estas once ediciones ha generado 36 laureados , muchos de ellos hoy, primeras figuras a escala mundial.
