New York's Americas Society Presents
Recital by Acclaimed Cellist Kim

New York - The Americas Society Music Department will present a recital by acclaimed cellist Kim Cook, on Thursday, March 11 at 7:30 PM in the Salon Simon Bolivar of The Americas Society, 680 Park Avenue, corner of 68th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan. She will be accompanied by pianist Elizabeth Sawyer Parisot.
This program will feature the Sonata in A Major by Luigi Boccherini, Sonata Opus 6 by Samuel Barber, The Black Swan and Capriccio Op. 49 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Negro Spirituals, the Suite Populaire Espagnole by Manuel de Falla and Pampeana N° 2 by Alberto Ginastera.

Kim Cook has been acclaimed for her "truly glorious tone" (Musical Opinion, London), "ravishing colors and textures" (New York Concert Review), and "keen awareness of line and style" (The Strad). She has toured extensively as an International Artistic Ambassador for the U. S. State Department, presenting concerts and master classes throughout the world. Cook has recorded the Haydn cello concertos with Bohuslav Martinu Philarmonic and the solo sonatas by Kodaly, Crumb, and Hindemith following a critically acclaimed performance at Weill Recital Hall. She served as principal cellist of the Sao Paulo State Symphony and taught at New Mexico State University before her current appointment at Penn State where talented students come from all over the world to study with her.
Pianist Elizabeth Sawyer Parisot has been described as ".a sensational pianist," (The Washington Post) and praised for her "lush, fluid Romanticism" (The New York Times). She has appeared in solo and chamber music concerts worldwide, performing at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, The Kennedy Center and The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Hispanic Institute in Madrid, and the Jerusalem Music Center in Israel. Ms. Sawyer Parisot has also been a guest artist at many prestigious music festivals. She has toured extensively with her husband, famed Brazilian cellist Aldo Parisot, and most recently performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Janos Starker, and Ralph Kirshbaum.
The Americas Society's 2003-2004 season of Music of the Americas explores genres that began "in the streets" and were later transformed by conservatory-trained musicians, like Tango, Jazz, Cuban Danzones, among others. A series of videos from the Latin American Video Archives will be shown throughout the season, each complimenting their respective concert. The Americas Society re-established the Music Department in January of 2001 and appointed Conductor/Flutist Maria Elena Tobon as its Director. The new Music Department promotes works by composers from Latin America, the Caribbean, United States and Canada, and also represents these region's diverse musical traditions.
